PSA : Your Old Pyrex Baking Pans

Be careful of your old pyrex glass baking pans. Tonight, one of them exploded and hit me in the stomach (I'm fine, no cuts, etc.), so please be careful!!! I'm lucky it didn't cut me, it was a pretty decent impact and covered over half my kitchen in glass. So, please be careful ladies and if your baking pans have been around a while, or are showing weakness in the glass, throw them away and buy new or buy nonstick non glass pans. I'm so happy my tots weren't in the kitchen and I blocked most of the blast of the glass flying, it sounded a LOT like a window getting blown out. Be careful bumpies!

  • Thanks ladies. Lil man started kicking right afterwards so its good to know he's fine, though, he probably got scared cause it was LOUD .
  • That's really scary!  Was it in the oven or microwave?

  • Wow! Scary! Was it cold when you put it in? I'm always weary that mine will do that if I put it directly in the oven from the fridge. I don't know if that's a legit fear though.
  • That happened to me once. So scary! Glad you made it out unscathed.

  • That happened to me a couple months ago! My dish was new though. Now I'm really weary of putting glass into the oven.

    Glad you're alright!

  • DH said no more glass dishes. And actually it was on top of my stove, but the oven was on. The vent to ovens comes out of the top of the coils on coil stove tops, not the glass tops, and the heat from the vent through the coils got so hot it exploded into hundreds of pieces. By the time my step MIL could turn to see what happened, and DH, BIL, and FIL made it into the kitchen and asked what happened was like 2 seconds. I felt the impact but still hadn't realized what happened, LO started kicking instantly and DH was rubbing my belly and lifting my shirt up to make sure I wasn't cut or bleeding because he noticed my foot was bleeding and I never felt the glass hit my foot. LO has been moving a lot since it happened so that I am grateful for.

And since so many of you had this happen, or heard of it, I think I may call the Pyrex company tomorrow and put a complaint in to make sure it doesn't happen because my dish wasn't even IN the oven, just on top of the stove with the oven on. Which makes no sense why it exploded but, unfortunately it did. Now to buy new baking pans and dishes that aren't glass.
  • @shellbell813 no it was on top of my counter because I washed it earlier today and was going to put it away but decided since I'd need it later I would just leave it out. It was room temperature, but yeah always be careful putting cold glass into and oven, and make sure you don't put cold water on a pan that is fresh out of the oven.
  • Yikes that's scary!!!! Glad your ok.
  • Oh jeeze. I bake in glassware all the time! That is really scary!

  • Oh that is so scary! I cook and bake a lot and use Pyrex. I know my small ones can only bake up to 350 degrees. What did you cook? How old were your pans?

Thank you so much for letting us know!

I am glad you are okay!
  • So glad that you're okay.  Thanks for the warning.

This happened to H one time when he left a ceramic baking dish on the stove top with the oven on. If the glass/ceramic is heated unevenly it will explode since only part of the dish is expanding due to the heat. It may not be a manufacturer defect but rather just uneven heating.

That's a very good possibility. Thanks @joules235! I'm just gonna stay away from glassware! Lol

  • @Joules235 this is the second one from the set to explode, last time it exploded in the oven whilst cooking the Thanksgiving Day turkey. So me and Pyrex are done lol
  • THE FUCK?!? Cool beans, now I'm terrified of my dishes.

I have a) never heard of this and b) put cold glass and ceramic dishes into the oven ALL THE TIME. How do these things not have bigger warnings?

  • Thanks ladies, yeah I usually sit mine on my metal pot holders or a cloth one, but even sitting them on the stove haven't had this issue besides the time in the oven. I've had many glass cups explode in my hand while washing them, but never such messes out of Pyrex or heard of it before, especially this close together. The feeling of the impact was scarier because with all the shards of glass I was scared I cut my stomach but thankfully only my foot was cut. Just wanted to let everyone know so hopefully no more glass explosions. I'm going to look into more metal nontick pans and get rid of my other two Pyrexs. The last two to explode were older, but still, I don't trust my newer set either and with it hitting my stomach DH wants nothing to do with it. He freaked cause my foot was bleeding and it was just a tiny cut from the glass hitting the floor, he noticed it before me. Hell, they all seen what happened before I even processed it and I was hit and blocked the glass from going very far. It caught me off guard and I just kinda stood their dumbfounded. Thanks again ladies and please be careful!!
  • I would call them. Don't they have a lifetime warranty? Supposedly glass is safer than any other material because of the coatings on non-stick (I use both, for the record.) You are the second person I have heard this happen to! So glad you weren't hurt!
