Le Sigh. Another drop in percentile UPDATE

edited March 2014 in May 2014 Moms
I'm waiting for my doctor's appointment to see what this means, but at the growth ultrasound, baby is down to the 8th percentile. So in the last 3 months, baby has gone from the 18th to the 11th and now the 8th.

I'm sure you are all on pins and needles to know what the doctor says (insert sarcasm font here for our sarcasm challenged friends), so I'll update then.

On a very happy note, the AFI looked great (which is what landed me in the hospital last time)!

Update: I posted below in the thread.

DD1: IUGR, low AFI delivered at 36 weeks

Lilypie Fourth Birthday tickers

DD2: IUGR, low AFI delivered at 37 weeks
Lilypie First Birthday tickers

  • Sorry I'm clueless and a FTM, but what does all the talk about percentiles mean?

So sorry!  Thoughts and prayers for your LO!  Is everything else looking good - i.e. NST's, blood flow (or as much as they can see via ultrasound)?

Edit: Because your ticker tells me how far along you are...

It refers to the size of the baby compared to other babies of the same gestational age.  If the baby is measuring less than the 10th percentile, it is considered to have IUGR (intra-uterine growth retardation). That is cause for concern because it may mean that baby is not getting adequate nutrients.

30 weeks today. Everything else looked good. I get my weekly BPPs continued. I just hate the unknown. Like, I could pop in for a BPP and if they don't like what they see, I could delivered that day. That's kinda what happened with DD. I showed up for a quick ultrasound and boom. Into the hospital for 4 weeks.

That's what I'm hoping. They diagnosed DD IUGR and she was a decent size. Just skinny and a small head. Doctors don't like to take chances though ;)

Again, I am so sorry!  I know (from experience with IUGR with DS and pree) how nerve-wracking it is.  It takes the fun out of looking forward to the delivery and makes every doctor's appointment nerve-wracking.  Big hugs, Mama!   You are doing awesome and I just hope your LO continues to grow and grow.

  • Thank you for the explanation.

OP I do hope that LO is going to do better in the next few weeks and can bake for duration of your pregnancy.
  • I am sorry you are dealing with this :-(  Sending good vibes your way that LO will stay put a while longer!
  • I'm sorry you're dealing with this!! Hugs!! Hope you get good news from the doctor. Update us when you can.

FTM question - do babies fluctuate week to week with their growth? Like could the baby have a growth spurt this week and go back up a bit? Or if they're behind, do they stay behind/get smaller and smaller?
My son was in the 75th percentile at one ultrasound and then went down to 65th, and then went down again to the 56th percentile. I completely understand that we're no where near concerning levels, but I'm curious. Is it harder for the babies to stay on track when they start getting smaller, because they have that much more to gain to keep up, or how does that work?

I think it is normal for babies to fluctuate.  We also have to all remember that ultrasounds are not an exact science.  There is a huge range of variance...especially as you get further along. It is a rough estimate and even one taken on the same day by a different practitioner using a different machine can vary greatly.  I just posted this in another thread, but I once had my OB tell me a weight and 2 days later my MFM tell me a weight that was a pound heavier.
