When boobs no longer floweth

DS totally drains both sides at every feed. He'll continue suckling, but no swallowing and I can't hand express anything until about 10 min. pass. Even then its just a couple drops. Generally he's content, but occasionally he gets pissy.

Should I take him off after some amount of time? I do worry that he's expending energy trying to eat and not getting anything, but then I know that letting him continue to nurse could help with supply. Also, what do others do when the boobs are out and lo is still hungry?

ETA: I do count diapers and we are hitting the 6-8+ daily. We've just gotten back to EBF in the last week by slowly cutting back supplemental bottles, so not sure yet on weight gain.

  • I let him keep nursing until he pops himself off.  I figure if he has the demand for more milk, I will let him help my supply.  The only time I pop him off is if he falls asleep and starts to flutter suck and his latch relaxes.  If I let him keep sucking like that he will kill my nips.

  • Keep nursing. They aren't really ever truly empty. As long as you are getting enough pee diapers I wouldn't worry. Make sure you are drinking water like it's your job.

  • Comfort nursing is great for supply. I allow it for awhile but will pop him off if it starts to bother my nipples or I need to go do something etc.

  • Let him keep nursing if you don't mind it. Like pp's have said it will stimulate more milk. If he gets pissy and is still hungry I find it helps to go back and forth between the boobs until baby is satisfied.

  • DS went through a growth spurt and even though my girls look deflated after feeding hourly, he apparently found enough to satisfy him. Like pp said, you're never without milk and the more you nurse you're actually helping increase your supply.

  • I read somewhere that the flutter suck and comfort sucking is babies ordering up their next meal, so if your nipples can handle it, let them do it.
  • The LC told me that after 6 weeks if you have something pressing you need to do, that you can pull them off without feeling bad if they are just comfort nursing (flutter sucks) and trade out for a paci if they seem to just want to suck-- that being said, I usually let her hang out unless I have to poop or something (which does happen!! Hah)

  • My LO also tends to drain both and then continue sucking. It's really frustrating sometimes, because if he's actually hungry he will fidget and pull off the nipple and cry. When this happens I try to switch him between boobs, burp him, rock him etc. until I get a little more juice!
