Pumping on the go

So I had a couple client meetings today and it was the first time I had to do any travel since I've been back at work from leave.

If you pump in your car, how do you do it? I was using a blanket as a cover and sitting in the third row of our minivan at a rest stop, but i felt like a weirdo. We have tinted windows, but you can still kind of see in. There was some dude walking around near my car smoking which creeped me out.
IVF, acupuncture, meditation and a miracle.

Re: Pumping on the go

  • That's about the best you can do in a car unfortunately . Is there a conference or bathroom u can go in instead ?

  • Yeah, people don't pay any attention.  I have pumped while driving (nursing cover, handsfree bra, hooked up everything in the parking lot beforehand) and once did this when leaving a client's parking garage before I realized I would have to go by the pay booth to exit...but even then, with rolling down my window and talking to the attendant and everything, I don't think they even noticed.  I pumped in glass-doored offices at work all the time, too, because we had only one private room for pumping and it was hard to fit in the schedule.  I guess I kind of got to the point where I realized that anybody who saw anything would probably be more embarrassed about it than I would.  Gotta do what you gotta do and all.

  • I used to pump in a parking garage. It was summer at a university so there was a row at the top with only about 10% full.  I would turn on the radio and didn't even use a cover, which wasn't too revealing except when I wore a maxi dress once and had to pull up my whole dress.  I was still freaked out and quit when people walked by, but that was rare.

I would then occasionally also pump using a hands-free bra on the freeway after setting up in the garage.  It was uncomfortable and usually there would be some kind of issue with a cup not quite being in the right place and I would give up.  Other people have said they did it on a regular basis, so perhaps it would have gone better with practice.  Once I was not planning to pump when I realized I was stuck in a huge traffic jam and would be on the road 3 extra hours.  I just set up right there on the interstate with cars parked all around.  I don't think anyone noticed and I didn't care if they did.  It wasn't my neighborhood so it wasn't like I was going to see anyone I knew.

I would say that being slightly uncomfortable was not good for supply. I hope you don't have to do this often, and perhaps if you do, you could go in somewhere like a bathroom on a different floor of the building you are visiting.  If you do use a rest stop, just lock up and relax.  Men are not going to figure out what's going on and it doesn't matter if they do.
  • I have often pumped in the second row of my van. In parking garages and open lots. I don't use a cover but try to pull my shirt down or close my jacket. I run the heater and listen to the radio. It's relaxing!

  • Same as @CK2MD I was an exclusive pumper so multitasking had to work for me.  I did it on the 30 min commute to daycare/grandmas and on the commute home from work.  That saved me an hour out of each day having to dedicate to additional pumpings for my son.
