PPD/PPA

Out of curiosity, if you were prescribed medication for Post Partum Depression/Anxiety, are you still taking your meds?

I wrote on here a long time ago about battling severe post partum anxiety. My doctor prescribed Zoloft and I felt a million times better. After a couple of months, I decided on my own to stop taking it (I know, I know, I should have discussed it with my doc.) I still had some anxiety, but felt that I was able to handle it.

Well, with all of Emmett's health issues lately, I feel those same anxiety attacks coming back. I feel like my life is spiraling out of control and I cant stop it. I'm in a cycle of worry about what might possibly be wrong with Emmett. The worry has caused me to lose my appetite, my desire to talk to my friends, and is even hindering my milk let-down. My mom is concerned that I am still struggling with PPA.

Anyways, the point to all this is that I'm wondering how long PPD/PPA can last. I never really discussed that with my doctor. Should that have gone away by now? Do I just have a general anxiety problem now?

Re: PPD/PPA

  • PPA/PPD can last for awhile. I went untreated for PPD after my 1st son was born and it lasted for well over a year. When I started to feel the same way after Alexander I knew I needed to talk to my dr. He prescribed me zoloft as well. I took it for about 2-3 months and was feeling better so I started to wean myself(I know bad since I didn't talk to dr first so know you are not alone in that aspect). I feel depressed still at times and know I probably shouldn't have stopped the medicine. I've debated on going back on it again but haven't made my decision yet.

With everything going on I agree with PP about talking to your dr. about getting back on zoloft. It will help you feel back to normal and make you that much better at coping with everything.

  • I had PPD and I cannot remember the name of what I was on. But anyways I was on them for one month and have been fine since then. Definitely don't heistate to talk to your doctor and of course we are all here to support you. I wish I would of gotten help sooner.

I take meds for PPA - still on them. I was told not to stop until I talked to OB, but that they recommended at least 6 months and usually start weaning around a year. ETA - the sooner you get to the doc the sooner you'll feel better. I'll be thinking of you, and Emmett - how is he doing?

  • I still take zoloft. I started last November. I have no plans to come off of it in the near future, although I do feel like my anxiety is well controlled. When I've been on antidepressants in the past, I've stayed on them for a year before weaning.

  • Thanks ladies. I know I shouldn't have stopped taking it without talking to the doc first. I guess a call to my doctor is in order. Sigh...

  • My doctor said I should stay on meds for 1 year...that ppd symptoms can last that long. As this is my third time having it, I knew that I could go off sooner (when the baby started sleeping better), so I stopped about a month ago.

  • I didn't have PPD..but after my LO went to the ER for his breathing issue at two months ...I felt the same  way you did.  The whole thing was definitely traumatic and it took me a while to get over it.  I was a total stress bomb.   So for me it wasn't PPD but a kind of PTSD.

You are a teacher right?  I bet the time off will really help in the summer.  Relaxation will help.

I also agree with others that you should talk to a doctor about meds especially since you know zoloft works for you.
