Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Hats

I'm assuming this is just a phase or just a boy thing but I just need reassurance lol!

Ds is 14 months and everytime I try to put a hat on him so his poor ears don't get cold but within seconds he rips it off. I've tried ones with Velcro under his chin so he can't take it off but he still manages to take it off. I've also tried putting the hood to his jacket over the hat but it doesn't work -_- any advice or help?:)

Re: Hats

  • B is the same way. He has gotten somewhat better recently, but rarely does a hat last longer than 5 minutes on his head.

It's frustrating but in the grand scheme of things... really NBD. I pick my battles, lol!

Same here. My mom wondered why I don't put one on her. Unless it's attached (hoodie) it'll be in her hands. I still have it with me though.

  • DS was like that at the beginning of winter, but he wasn't fighting hoods as much, so I was dressing him in hooded sweatshirts and then put a jacket over him.

Then one day, out of the blue, I put a hat on him and he didn't put up a fight.  I was wearing him in the Ergo and I put my hat on, the his hat on.  Maybe because his hands were not as free, or because he was too busy looking at other things, he just left the hat alone.

Ever since then, it hasn't been as big of a fight to get him to wear a hat.

It usually works better if I put the hat on him AFTER we are outside - there's enough to distract him so he doesn't fight the hat.

  • Lo does the same things with hats. She doesn't mind hoodies as much though- not sure if its because it's looser? So she usually has a hoodie under her coat when it's cold enough for me to want her head to be covered.

  • My DS is the same way and has been for a while. I try the hat first but if he insists on taking it off, I usually try to just put his hood up. It doesn't cover his ears as well but he has a harder time getting it off (he pulls forward and never really tries to push backwards). If all else fails, I throw a blanket over him while we're outside and just hold him so he can't get it off until we're inside.
Maybe you could also try letting him pick out his own hat. If he picks it, he might be more inclined to wear it.

  • have you tried a hat that ties under the chin? DS pulls off regular hats, but he can't get the tied ones off because he can't undo the knot.
