Two Vessel Cord?

We just had our 16 week appointment on Friday and one of our baby girls has a two vessel cord.  Besides the fact that they have to especially watch her growth, they said with this there is a 1% chance of a cardiac defect, 1% chance of chromosomal abnormalities, and a .5% chance of Down's Syndrome.  Everything looks great on ultrasound, and there is only an 8% growth difference as of now.  I know these are very SLIGHT risks, but I'm still wondering if any of you had this with any of your babies.

Re: Two Vessel Cord?

  • My baby B has SUA (single umbilical artery or a 2 vessel cord). I had already done a CVS at 12 weeks so we know there are no chromosomal defects. It still didn't stop me from extra googling. My MFM had me meet with a pediatric cardiologist and we had a fetal echocardiogram on him to make sure his heart looked good - it had looked good at the anatomy scan, but they were just being cautious. At that time baby B was measuing smaller, but now, at 30 weeks they are both measuring in the 65%ile. With twins there is already a chance of growth restriction so I was definitely freaked, but the frequent ultrasounds

If you are very concerned about the chromosomal defects you could do a amnio to confirm - if that's something you need to know going forward.

They'll have a good idea at her anatomy scan how her heart looks. If there are any concerns, I'm sure they'll order a fetal echo.

My baby B also has some spots on his liver which they think are calcifications and nothing to worry about, especially since I've had the CVS and we know its not chromosomal, but I still worry.

It's scary to hear something is slightly abnormal or different with one of the babies. hang in there - don't google too much. They'll keep a close eye on her growth and get some good shots of her vital organs at the anatomy scan which should hopefully put your mind at ease.

  • Thanks @legaleagles.  As of now, all organs look great, but it's early to tell.  They said we'll get a better idea at 20 weeks.
They've already said that they're going to do the echo on both babies in the future so hopefully that will ease our minds as well.
It's just not fun to have one MORE thing to be anxious about during a multiples pregnancy!  I think we'll do the amnio further down the road, as it won't change our mind on anything if something is wrong but might ease anxieties our help us prepare.
I'm trying to stay away from Google! :)

  • Baby B has a two vessel cord and is IUGR. He also has a heart defect and will need heart surgery when he is born. It was very scary early on (22-28weeks) and I'm sure when the surgery comes around it will be scary too but I've now made it to 34 weeks and B is still doing great! We have had several echos but our cardiologist is amazing and always puts me at ease after an appointment. If you have any other questions please let me know, hopefully you will have better luck!
  • Hi I was lurking while looking for something. I don't have multiples but DS had a 2 vessel cord so I was followed by MFM. Found out later most of the babies in our family have had it. They thought DS only had 1 kidney during the first scan which can be caused by this, 2nd scan showed 2 kidneys one much smaller. They said he would probably be born 6 weeks early. He was born 3 days before his due date at a healthy 8 lbs. he had a kidney ultrasound at 3 weeks old where they determined everything was there, the right size, and functioning. Good luck and try not to worry too much!

  • Thank you all for your input!  @Caseyk1127, @jagarner81
I guess it's just the unknown that's scary.  She looks so great right now, but there's so much that we still don't know.  I think our next full ultrasound will be the most telling.  Another month away :)

  • DD1 had a 2 vessel cord. She had no other issues and was born 7 lbs 2 oz. I'm pregnant with twins now and DS has a 2 vessel cord as well. He's measured very close to DD2 in the 50th percentile the entire time. I had 4 A/S and have not shown any other issues with him at all.
  • Thank you so much @abbypug19!  That's so relieving :)

  • @rannndi  No problem!   I just had a growth ultrasound today and at 34w3d he's measuring 5lbs 8 oz,  a little smaller than his sister but he's in the 50th percentile.
  • Awhhh good, I'm so glad!!!!  Thank you for sharing that!  Any good news is relieving, @abbypug19.  We're seen by specialists for the twins, so they obviously point out EVERY risk factor and it can come off as so scary!
