LOs first trip out?

Sorry if this has been answered before, I got an hours sleep and can't find a thread, although I'm sure there is one, and I must be tired as just posted this a minute ago in the totally wrong board! We went for our two week check up yesterday and all is good. Back over birth weight, and growing well. I asked the nurse when I could take him out and about with me and she said 4 months. I said "do you mean 4 weeks?" And she said "no, 4 months before he can go with me to the supermarket, cafe, dinner, mall..." I am really confused. I see people out all the time with LOs, and I know my sister took her DD out after a week in central London. I didn't get to question her further as LO had a melt down and pooped all over the docs table, but when I got home I thought about it and thought I would ask on here to see what the norm was. BTW we live in Arizona, it's 85 degrees here so he wouldn't be cold, and there are now crowds or public transport that I would have to use, so limited exposure to people compared to when I lived in London. TIA!

Re: LOs first trip out?

  • My pedi said 2 months in general however he said if I needed to go around the block for a walk with LO that was just fine. Basically he said avoid people coming too close to the baby until he is vaccinated but it's perfectly ok to take him out for a walk if desired.

  • 4 months seems a bit much!! I know there were a couple posts about this awhile back, but I'm mobile and can't link it for you.

I can't imagine having to wait 4 whole months to take my LO out. Personally I waited two weeks, but I know many ladies didn't wait that long. We only went on short trips/errands. Then when she hit 1 month we went out a bit more. I know some docs say to wait until they've had all their shots, and some say it's fine when ever you feel comfortable.

I think as long as you're careful to not let people touch him, keep him covered, and use common sense you'd be fine to take him out now.
  • I have a 4 year old and have to take him to preschool etc. This means I have to take lo as well. We go to restaurants and the grocery with both boys. My doctor said to just be smart about it.

  • We've gone out quite a bit- with 2 older ones, it would be hard not to. We keep her in the car seat covered and I will absolutely slap any hands that reach for her. 4 mos is crazy.

  • My pedi said we could go out right away.  4 months seems crazy to me.  My LO will be going to daycare at 3 months and exposed to who knows what there.
  • Thanks ladies! 4 months did seem crazy to me too! I think I would have actually gone insane not going out for 4 months!
  • 4 months?!?  No way!  We went at a week old because we had cabin fever.  Plus, I have older kids and we have to get used to being out and about for their events.  We keep the outings short and keep her in her seat as long as possible.  We don't let people hold her or get in her face either.  I figure that she's not getting exposed to anything different than the crap my older kids are bringing home from school.  Also, with the visitors we have had, my house has been Grand Central Station.  Cooties everywhere!

Also, we'll be traveling with her at 6 weeks then she'll be at daycare for my return to work at 7 weeks.  There is no way we could stay cooped up inside for even a month let alone 4.  I'd say go out if you are up to it, unless there is an underlying health concern.
  • Also, I'm thinking you should mention this to your pedi next time and see what he/she says.  For one thing, I'd like to know if one of my staff was giving out that kind of off the wall advice.  But also, this last time we had a new nurse and she kept asking me crazy questions for a newborn- like how many servings of fruits and veggies does LO eat each day???  WTH. I finally just scoffed and asked her to skip those and just ask us the newborn questions and she was like, "oh sorry- I've never had kids before."  Ummm... ok- but you have a brain, right?  Anyway, clearly she was just a ditz and not my doctors usual nurse so I let it go.  But you best believe I will speak up if we have her again.

  • Ha! We took LO to the grocery store on the way home from the hospital because his sisters have to eat :)
We kept him covered, and no one went near him.
Since then (he's 10 days old) he's been to his sisters' ballet classes, pediatrician appointments, and to pick them up from school, among running some other small errands. We also have a family trip to Disney at the end of April planned, he'll be 10 weeks.
4 months?! I don't have time for that.
  • Thanks @slwprincess that's a good point. I have people work for me in my business and although I train them well sometimes you never know what will come out of their mouths! It was the nurse that said it, I will check with the actual doc also next time I'm there!
  • I took LO to DH's games on Monday at 6 days old. But there wasn't a crowd since the games were scheduled last minute and I didn't let anyone touch her. We also grabbed lunch out that day and I just kept her covered in her car seat. We've also taken her to her pedi twice, the hospital once and my OB's office once. And I plan on taking her out to a store tomorrow and will just keep her covered in her car seat there, too. We are just being careful when she's out but it's not possible to never take her out considering DH's travel schedule - I mean I need to buy groceries at some point...

  • I took mine to a restaurant at 1w. But, I kept him either covered in his car seat or covered while nursing. Same is true when we go to the store, he stays under the car seat canopy. I don't raise it even when people initiate a baby conversation. I just smile and walk on.

  • I've never been told to keep her in or anywhere special. We've been out and about since one week when her sister got home from daycare. We've been to library story times, the zoo, church, and plenty of stores. Idk, with a two year old home I can't imagine staying in.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • I took LO out at 6 days to the baby's R Us because I needed nipple shields or I would have quit breast feeding... Then again at 9 days to have her pedi look at her belly button that wasn't healing well. At 13 days we went to the store to get a few things and now at 15 days we are going to head to the store by ourselves for the first time.

  • I went to Kohl's today and Costco on Monday, she isn't even a week old yet. I just kept her car seat covered.

  • Yeah 4 months seems crazy to me. I'm back at work at 3 months, so what if my son was going to daycare? Anyway, I've been out a ton- baby and me yoga, whole foods, the mall, tons of restaurants. LO stays in his car seat most of the time so I'm not too worried about it. I'm in Boston, so weather is not in my favor :) But, it's important to stay sane.

  • Sorry I'm not a hermit. 4 months is just crazy. At less then a week, LO had been to Walmart, Target, Costco, and feed stores. All the places we couldn't go because it was too far away or I was in the forever early labor. We just used common sence. Sorry kid, but we got things to do, and while your portable, your along for the ride.

  • That's crazy. I wasn't even told to stay in that long, and I had a preemie.

  • My doctor told me that two or three weeks is plenty. I've taken LO to appointments, out for brief strolls (Canadian winter yo) and to a few stores.. he'll be a month old on Saturday, and as far as I'm concerned after that he'll go everywhere with me. I'll let strangers look at him but no touchy touchy, like, ever. lol
