Anyone ever sell things from home?

I'm talking Avon, scentsy, Mary Kay, etc. kind of thing. Have any of you done this? Were you very successful at it? I need some kind of supplimental income because aparently I'm having a hard time living inside my means.

Re: Anyone ever sell things from home?

  • I tried a vitamin thing once. Didn't work out very good. Too many other people sold it too. But if you had something that nobody else did it would of worked out better.

  • I tried being a Tastefully Simple consultant for about a year. It was stupid. They have a quota you have to meet every 3 months, so at first I was buying stuff in my husband's name just to meet the quota. Then I realized how dumb it was and just didn't meet the quota, and I was promptly kicked out of being a consultant (I was so over it by that point.) I was able to book like, two parties during that year, one hosted by my mom and one hosted by my aunt. That was it. People just weren't interested and I totally get it, because I hate getting invited to those kinds of home parties too. Some people do really well as consultants for direct sales, but I learned quickly that kind of success really is rare. Not trying to discourage you from trying, just being honest about my experience!

  • I did Avon for a few years. Made enough to cover my purchases sometimes. If you have a place with a lot of women or have a large social network or family you may do better. I wasn't allowed to sell at work, but my aunt works in a school and was able to until a few years ago. She always did well and since she built up the customer base before she wasn't allowed to sell in the school, she was still successful.
    3 ectopic pregnancies (EDD's 1/30/12-tube removed, 6/2/12-methotrexate and 10/2/12-methotrexate)
IVF and Natural FET resulted in BFN's and a hole in our wallets
Natural BFP #4 on 9/7/12 gave us our miracle on 5/18/13

  • I've been selling Thirty-One going on three years this summer.  I do buy some stuff to keep on hand myself for people who ask me to buy something on short notice but have had really good luck with this company.  If you want more information about Thirty-One, just let me know.

Don't do Avon. You end up spending more than you make (if you make any money, that is). I sold Avon for 4 months until I quit

I'm not sure about the other companies, like Thirty-One, but I know a few people who sell it, and they haven't had any issues. Plus, they have really good products. Good luck!

  • I am mostly a lurker but I have a good amount of experience with this. I sold Mary Kay for years and didn't make a full income by any means but I was able to get all my make up paid for and a good size of spending money each month.

However since my LO was born I decided to stop Mary Kay and I have started selling children's books at home through Usborne Books and More. It's not a full income for us but it's some good spending money. It's been great for us to build up a collection of books for our house and it has helped me meets lots of new moms. I like this company because they do not have quotas and you can really get started for a very small amount of money. I'd highly recommend it if you need some extra money and you have friends with children (up to preteens).

My cousin sells for 4 of these companies right now, so I doubt you can make good money with just one.  She's also constantly annoying the beejeezus out of everyone on her facebook friends list by posting about them, and has sold her mom so many bags that the woman can no longer find people willing to accept them as gifts...

In short, I've only seen it work for people who can do it 60 hours a week and take product to flea markets and craft sales in addition to doing parties.
I think I'm FB friends with your cousin.  Just kidding
I don't think I'd be very good at this though.  I already have a job, I just need a supplemental income.  I think I'll just go sell my plasma for awhile.
  • I did Thirty-One for awhile.  I am a very introverted person, so it was hard for me to book parties.  When I did book one, it was always good.  I'm just not cut out for direct sales, but I know others who have done very well with it.

I can't resist....I tried, but can't. Do you really think a "sales from home" thread is the best place for you to show up again?
see now, @CNJ4EVA this is why you're awesome.
