Bra shopping?

I was about a 32 G before pregnancy and always bought my bras online because of my odd size.  The panache superbra was my fav.  Everything is way too small now and I'm planning to go shopping today to get bras and finally buy some maternity clothes.  Should I just head straight to the specialty bra store, or do maternity stores sell non-standard size bras?  I don't want to buy a bunch of stuff online that doesn't fit because returns are a hassle.
Also what should I expect as far as my size continuing to increase?  I read that my rib cage could expand up to 4 inches and I'm sure cup size will change too.  I just hate spending $60-70 on a bra I can't wear for very long, but if that's what I have to do, I will. For those on mobile I'll be 15w tomorrow and I'm probably at least a 34 H or larger now.

  • If you can, call the store before you gi to see if they carry anything with your size. With dd I was an F after she was born and got a few bras at motherhood. Im not sure how big their sizes run though. Big boobs suck! Good luck!

  • If you are planning on nursing I might try maternity bras, in hopes they can still be used later. I got only two in my new size, which makes me crazy to have to rewear them but I didn't want to drop that much money and replace them in a few months.. The lady swears they will grow with me and I'm not entirely sure I believe her but they weren't that expensive so I figured worth a shot.

Yes! Especially the big boobs/small rib cage combo.  Makes it impossible to find bras and clothes that fit.

  • I would just get regular bras that you find comfortable.  The size you are now is very likely to NOT be the size you will be nursing - I wouldn't invest in nursing bras until your supply is fully in and established some weeks after birth.  Your cup size is likely to go up still (sorry!) and your rib cage may expand while pregnant but will probably go back once baby is here.

Most stores that aren't specialty bra stores that carry extended sizes will carry up to a G, but nothing bigger.  Not completely sure about maternity stores, but all the specialty bra stores I shop at also have maternity/nursing bras.  But like PP said, call before you go and make sure they carry at least 2-3 cup sizes larger than what you need right now.  Your boobs are likely not done growing.

    Good luck.

I feel your pain. I was a 32F when I got married. Fatter now and have no idea what i measure. I vote specialty store. That way you can get measured and maybe not have to try on so many.

  • Nordstrom is the best place for big chested girls. I got 36Hs there. You'll probably have to order them, but they seemed to have a trial one of each size.
  • I usually like Nordstrom too..but they seem to do a better job when non pg..last pg, they totally put me in a bra that was yoo tight for rib cage...this time I just fit myself at destination maternity...went from 32d to 38c
  • I had to resort to Nordstrom recently after I got shot down at Motherhood Maternity. I moved up to a 36G...even that band size is too "small" for the cup size to be standard. You'd think maternity stores would have a wider range since everyone goes up a few sizes, but it looks like I'll be sticking with online options when I have to get nursing bras.
  • Another vote here for Nordstrom. I was usually a 32DDD and they re-fit me into a 36DD and suggested some super comfy, supportive bras. I was told to just rotate 3 bras for now and then go back 4-6 weeks before delivery and get fitted again for nursing bras. I was just in there today to buy a couple and they were on sale - score!
  • Jumping in on this a little late...definitely spilling out of my bra now...so my question is do I go with a regular bra or a nursing bra?  I know @ncbelle said they will likely grow more once my milk is in, so I'm thinking a regular bra and then go shopping again once I have baby?

  • I would go to nordstrom or a specialty bra store. I was a 34E pre pregancy. I think the biggest I got was 36FF towwards the end of my first pregnancy. I got fitted 2-3 times during it. I bought only one bra each time. Motherhood Maternity had such limited selection and a lot of non underwire nurisng bras they tried to sell me.

I wouldn't buy nursing bras..I'd stick with a regular one. I went up 2 cup sizes to a 36H while BF. I got fitted about 2 weeks after baby and that size worked for me the whole year i BF
