Hi everyone,
I'm usually a lurker on the bump boards that apply to me, but thought I'd jump in with an introduction here.
I am a new mom to 33 week twin girls. Peyton and Morgan were due April 10th but arrived on February 20th at 33 weeks exactly. Until the first week of Feb, my pregnancy was rather uneventful, other than some maternal health issues, but really 'normal' in terms of the pregnancy. I had some pregnancy induced hypertension beginning late in my first trimester, but it had been kept under control with a very very small dose of Labetalol - 100mg twice daily. When I went for my MFM appointment on Feb 4th my blood pressure was up. There were traces of protein in my urine as well but nothing serious. The nurse had me lay down for a while and checked again. Still up. I was sent through to early labour assessment for monitoring and it was decided to admit me. My doctor said it would likely be a "tune up" admission to get the blood pressure under control and I'd be back home in a few days.
Well that didn't happen. The blood pressure kept getting worse even with increased medication, as did the protein in the urine - I had preeclampsia.
On February 18th the protein level spiked and we started the induction process with administration of cervidil. After almost 48 hours of induction I couldn't dilate past 1cm. The girls started to show a little distress with heart rates dipping after a contraction so we went to c-section. My two beautiful girls arrived on February 20th at 11:35 and 11:36pm weighing 4lb 3oz and 3lb 7 oz respectively.
Peyton came out screaming, was checked over and brought to me before going to NICU. Morgan cried as well but then had a little respiratory difficulty - "lazy breathing" is how the doctor referred to it and was whisked away to NICU before I got to see her. Recovery was the longest 3 hours of my life, waiting to see my daughters.
The girls each spent only about 12 hours on CPAP for breathing and have been fine ever since. After just a few days they were ready to move from NICU 1 to NICU 2, and at 6 days old moved into NICU 3 (transitional care). Today was day 10 and the girls are thriving. Both are feeder/growers - just needing to master feeding from either the breast or a bottle and grow a little before they can come home. I anticipate another couple of weeks in here, and as hard as it is I tell myself they are getting the best possible care. I'm still anxious to get them home!
Look forward to reading everyone's preemie stories and will share updates on my girls as we get closer to going home!
Re: New Mom to 33 week twins
DS was born at 32w3d at 4lbs 6oz due to spontaneous PTL. He was on CPAP for 24 hours and had no other breathing issues. He spent 24 days in the NICU as a feeder and grower. He is a happy, healthy, and willful 16 month old!
I hope your NICU stay is just as smooth. Good luck!
