Enlarged Kidney??

I'm a major mobile lurker because my first day I made the mistake of being a white knight when I didn't know what this site was about or how it worked! Anyway, I think I've lurked enough to understand most of the Bump Rules and want to try to start contributing again! Not sure if anyone has posted about this yet, couldn't find anything recently so I decided I would ask!!

We had our a/s yesterday and found out we were having a boy!! But nothing else, not if he was healthy or not. All she said was someone would contact me. Someone thankfully did contact me today from my OB office and told me his right kidney is slightly enlarged. We have to go back in 4 weeks to another place for a follow up ultrasound to see how the kidney is looking.

I know this is out of my control but it's hard not to freak out a little bit knowing something may be wrong.

Has anyone had this experience with an enlarged kidney in their baby?

Re: Enlarged Kidney??

  • Yes, this will require extra screening both pre-natal and post-natal if there is still enlargement.  We caught the kidney enlargement with my son when I went past my due date in my last pregnancy.  The first month or so of his life he was put on anti-biotics (to prevent kidney infections) until we could rule out reflux as the cause.  We did an ultrasound on him when he was two weeks old, and a VCUG test to rule out reflux around 6 weeks.  The majority of cases will resolve on their own, and the size of the kidney will be monitored by ultrasound and some further testing if necessary.

  • He would have outgrown the enlarged kidney (hydronephrosis) on his own (this exact thing happened to my nephew and he outgrew it).  While we were testing we figured out another extremely rare problem that was causing intermittent hydronephrosis (I'm talking so rare that the chief of Urology at Boston Children's Hospital had never seen the symptoms in a 1 year old).  We found he had a blood vessel on the wrong side of the Ureter that was compressing and causing an extra enlargement of the kidney when he had too many fluids.  My son had a minor surgery at 16 months to fix the other problem and is doing great now.

My understanding is that the majority of hydronephrosis cases will resolve on their own and all it takes is monitoring.  Really just follow the advice of you doctor, you may get lucky and find out at the next ultrasound everything is fine.
  • Thanks @Tristen33 for sharing your story. I sure hope so.
I'm glad your son is doing well now!

  • Not sure if this is similar but at 18 weeks we were told LO had a slightly dilated kidney.

OB was not too concerned, told us it's not uncommon for boys and most resolve in utero. We have a follow up u/s scheduled for next month to monitor.

Try not to worry too much

  • Not exactly. My son was born without his left kidney. He's 7 now and isn't able to play full contact sports. Otherwise he's leading a Normal life.
