IUGR ladies - how is LO doing?

Just thought I'd do a little follow up post for everyone who had an IUGR baby (I'm assuming we've all had our babies.) to see how your LO is doing.

Alexander was born at 37 weeks via c-section.  He was 4 lbs, 15 oz at birth.  At his 1 month appointment (2 weeks ago), he was 6 lbs, 15 oz.  He's been doing well.  He's a good eater and eats anywhere from 2.5-4 oz at a time. He is pretty good at supporting his head and likes tummy time.  He still doesn't look at us in the eye or smile, but I'm hoping those will come soon.

Re: IUGR ladies - how is LO doing?

  • Good idea @djtippietoes !!

My little Lilly was born at 38 weeks at 4lbs 12oz. At her One month appointment two weeks ago she weighed in at 7lbs. I'm guessing now she's about 7.5 and we'll see where she's at in two weeks.

She's been doing well other than her milk protein allergy that is still causing her a lot of fussiness. I have eliminated dairy from my diet two weeks ago now (with a few accidental slip ups due to me not knowing something had milk in it), so I'm hoping she'll be feeling better soon. It breaks my heart seeing her in pain when she's eating.

She started smiling yesterday and it melted my heart. Now my DH and I are constantly trying to get a smile out of her.

  • @djtippietoes great idea. I was wondering this the other day, too!

Sam was born at 37 w 5 days, 5 lbs 4 oz. We had a tough first month with marginal gain. At his one month appt, he had gained 1 lbs, 1 oz. I was mostly pumping and supplementing, so we knew he was eating enough volume. So we decided my milk probably wasn't rich enough, and switched to formula. It's made a big difference, and at his 7 week appt he weighed 8 lbs. He's in the 3rd percentile for his age. We did end up using soy formula because he had so much gas and misery. Since we switched so many things at once I don't know if the milk-based formula was the problem, but the soy seems to be working, so whatever.

He is really alert, makes great eye contact, has a really clear personality...but hasn't really smiled. A couple little twitches of his lips when he finishes a bottle, but nothing definitive. I'm starting to worry since he's almost 8 weeks old. The Dr said he was ok neurologically, but I want a smile darn it!

  • Sorry you ladies are all dealing with a milk protein allergy.  Hopefully it'll get resolved!

@jocountry i have a question about eye contact.  Does he follow you with his eyes?  Sometimes I think Alexander is looking at me but then if I move a bit to the side, he's still looking at the spot where I was.  I hate that I'm worrying about this, but I am.
  • @HashtagRainbow - I told her pedi about how fussy and gassy she was. She would (still does a little) cry out in pain while she's eating. Yes, I'm EBF.

While we were at her appt my LO had a dirty diaper. So the pedi tested her stool for the milk protein allergy. I don't know exactly how they tested it, but it came back positive. So I eliminated dairy from my diet. It's been two weeks now and I'm still seeing her act the same. Which is disappointing. It may be a little better, but not fully. The pedi also said that a lot of babies who have the milk allergy also have a soy allergy. Hopefully I won't have to eliminate soy as well.
  • Great idea!
    Dominic was 3lb 11oz and Jackson was 5lb 7oz. Born at 35+5.
At 6 weeks, Dominic was 7lbs! Our big boy Jackson was almost 9. :)

Dominic was having some issues eating before he left the nicu, but is now doing great. I'm breastfeeding part time and supplementing with formula. They're both doing great in that area, but they've both been diagnosed with infant torticollis, so new issues to work on.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say he follows us, but he does stare right into our eyes. And when we move, he might follow us a little, but often blinks and looks somewhere else. He does the blank stare thing lots, too. He does follow toys some, especially side to side. But he has to be in the right mood to play those games!

I am right with you worrying about this. I feel like I am manufacturing trouble where there might not be any, but I am worried anyway. I heard an autism ad on the radio yesterday about early diagnosis and nearly cried. I keep trying to remind myself to use his gestational due date and not just his delivery date for milestones, but it's hard.

@lihau88 The crying out in pain is all too familiar. As soon as DD finishes her bottle, the next few minutes are still seemingly painful for her (even though we switched formula) and you can hear things rumbling in her intestines and stomach. She is on a fully hydrolyzed formula now, so if she's still having issues, an amino acid based one is next. :-S

Ugh, I also hear that rumbling. I feel so bad for her. I hope your LO's stomach settles down soon!

Just curious, were you breastfeeding before the formula? And which formula is she on? I'm thinking I may switch to formula once I'm back to work and am curious as to the options and how the switch worked out.

@jocountry i have to remind myself of that too and that IUGR babies sometimes have delays meeting their milestones but it turns out okay in the end.  I worry about autism too, but honestly I'd probably worry about that regardless.  I've read that it's way too young to see any signs of that though.

I guess Alexander doesn't really look at anything, not just me.  He followed an object once, but I can't get him to do it again.
  • @djtippietoes one of my friends said the most helpful thing yesterday. That she had read that some babies concentrate their energy on one area of development at a time, letting others lag. For example, a baby that still crawls but has lots of words versus a baby that walks but doesn't talk much. So for our little guys, maybe they spend so much energy growing and making up for their lost time in utero that they hit other milestones slower.  Makes total sense and helped me put it in perspective a little.
