Help me 'Love My Baby'

So I'm taking this free 'parenting' class called "Love My Baby".  The idea of it is great, we have one on one time with our babies, sing, play, learn new songs then have group talk about certain things like language, development and how we cope as Mom's.  The teachers come around and take pictures of you interacting with baby and will give us a scrapbook at the end.

Sounds great right? But the teachers (especially the old one) are very judgy.  I feel like a crap Mom.  My son is very mobile and wants nothing more than to crawl around the room and visit all the other babies. The teacher keeps telling me (and some of the other Mom's who have the same issue) to 'get his attention he should be focused only on you'! And then make passive aggressive comments about how we aren't trying hard enough to capture our babies attention.

SOOO what is your go to song/action/thing to do to make your baby happy/smile/look at you? No props are allowed apparently.

  • @mufflerlove at the OEYC? I wanted to sign up for that but they had a cut off of x amount of months and a wait list.  Which was probably for the best anyways since M hates it!

But I can picture P crawling around all oiled up! Hilarious!!

  • @CL8badB he doesn't really try to copy me which is one of the things they talk about! Should I be worried? I think this class is bad for me!

Seriously, DD has the same issue. She's so friendly and is an explorer, so she's always crawling around the room, and "saying hi" to all the other moms and babies. I feel like she's happy, and being social is a good thing at this age. I normally either 1. call her back *in high pitched voice* "C, come to mommy!" Or, any of these 3 songs will work: frere jacques, twinkle twinkle or itsy bitsy spider. I've been singing those to her everyday since she was born. She gets really giddy when I sing them, and comes crawling back to me.

If you feel crappy after the class, stop doing it. You might be missing out on some photos and money, but is it worth your happiness/mood?

    -tickles
    -"I'm gonna get you"
-any songs that have motions ("Itsy Bitsy Spider," "Head and Shoulders," "Where Is Thumbkin," etc.)

    ETA: Peek a boo
  • "I'm gonna get you" followed by tickles.
If you're happy and you know it- loves watching me clap and slowly learning to do it
    Kissing her feet
    Fake, dramatic sneezing

  • What the...? This woman should not be teaching the class.
Your baby is naturally going to be interested in all the new people and the action around him.

This is a class, no? not a one-on-one session. Why would they have a problem with your child wanting to socialize with other babies or focus on the novelty of the environment if they want to have multiple babies and mothers in a class? Why is the socialization not incorporated in the "love my baby" theme?

I guess I just don't get the concept of the class. I get one-on-one time with Nora all day long, so if I get the chance to have her around other children in a group setting, then I am thrilled to see her have the opportunity to interact with other babies.

It's at a local public school actually. I'm not sure who does it. The age range is to a year but all the other babies are less than 6 months. It's like a work out trying to keep up with her while she's oily and my hands are oily lol I wish I had have found it when she was younger!
  • Yeah it's a completely unreasonable concept to have my baby only focus on me in a room full of so much cool stuff/people/babies.

Also just to make matters worse this class is from 130 to 330 right when he would take his afternoon nap!

  • Whoa! A 2 hour class where they are supposed to focus on just you?!? I take my LO to baby story time at the library and he can barely hold it together for the 30 minutes of that!

  • Yea I'd stop going to a class that made me feel bad and I'd take all the other moms who didn't like it with me, you said it's free right? So no downside! I'd also probably be asked to leave because I wouldn't be able to hold my tongue....
