Relief for sciatic nerve pain

I have had this on and off through my entire pregnancy. It has gotten worse since I hit the third trimester. I find myself limping because my left butt cheek is so sore. Any other ladies have this? Looking for some ideas that will help relieve my aching butt and legs!

  • So sorry you're going through this! I had sciatica pain for a couple of days and asked my OB about it. She pretty much said that I just had to suck it up. She said if the pain becomes unbearable to reach out to a physical therapist. She was very hands off about it.

  • I had terrible sciatic nerve pain during my first pregnancy. There were times it was difficult to make it through the day, sit at my desk at work, or sleep through the night because of the constant pain. I saw a chiropractor and it made an incredible difference. I only had to go a few times and that was enough to get me through the pregnancy. I definitely recommend it.

  • I haven't had terrible pain like this, but it has been on and off. I find my activity level and the shoes I am wearing really affect how my lower back/legs feel.

I do go for monthly massages with an RMT, which helps keep things loose and relaxed. If I'm having a really bad day I find sitting on a heat pad (so the heat is on my butt and low back) really helps. I have one of those microwave magic bags, so it's not super hot and the heat dissipates after about 30-40 minutes.

  • Acupuncture was suggested to me when the pain in my left butt cheek was unbearable.

I forgot about acupuncture. That definitely helped me too, in addition to the chiropractor.

  • I was told to watch my posture, improve my core strength (ab and back muscles), and I also started prenatal yoga.  Those three things combined got rid of the sciatic pain and I haven't felt it since.  Good luck!
  • I've got it too. My mom had it when she was pregnant with me, and said the only thing that fixed it was giving birth. haha.. It sucks but we only have a few weeks left, so I'm not looking into any physical therapy or chiropractics when it will likely go away on it's own.

I was having this around 19 weeks.  I really think the prenatal yoga has helped.

Ditto the prenatal yoga! Mine has hurt even before pregnancy but has gotten worse in the past few months. The yoga moves have helped and although I only do it once a week I know the moves/stretches that really help so I can do them at home when it's bothering me.

  • I had it for about a week really bad. I called my ob and she said heating pad then icing my lower back. She also recommended Tylenol. She said it would eventually go away and it did. It was really painful and I could barely walk for that week and as a teacher that was hard. I am hoping it doesn't come back but that may be wishful thinking. Hope you feel some relief soon!
  • Acupuncture for SURE. I had this really bad. Like body went into shock, throwing up and got the shakes bad. It was incredibly painful. Went to acupuncture 3x that week got a massage as well. Always always ice first, then heat 24 hrs after you feel the pain set it. Hope that helps! Stretch everyday as well. Best of luck!

  • Physical therapy and chiropractor visits have helped me a lot. Massages are also helpful. My insurance covers medically necessary massages so long as your provider writes a script- maybe you could see if yours does too?
