Preemies

When did you stop seeing the neos?

The girls have their big, epic 15M (ish) follow-up with their neonatologist and team tomorrow -- full hearing and developmental screen. We did this 6M ago, and it takes like 3+ hours. I'm more exhausted than the girls are when all is said and done (can you tell I'm excited?). I especially dislike this appointment because they have to dimensionalize how far behind DD1 is in terms of her gross motor skills. I mean, duh, I get she's behind. That's why she's in EI. I don't need the slap-in-the-face, comes-with-a-number confirmation of that fact.

That said - is this likely to be it? Assuming the only lingering issues we have are low muscle tone for DD1 -- should I expect we'll be going back again? I'd love to be done...

Re: When did you stop seeing the neos?

  • We actually never saw the neos after we were discharged. They moved all care over to her various specialists. I hope the screen goes well!

  • Ours do 6 months, 15 months, 2 years, and 3 years.  My pedi thought they might discharge us early, but I don't think they will b/c so many preemie issues don't come up until later.  I just have one, and I like the appts.  It's super stressful, yes, but overall I it's nice to get info from the people who know rather than our doctor, who really wants her to be at her real age developmentally.
  • We had a NICU follow-up clinic that we went to every 4-6 months. She just had her last appointment at 2.5 years. It was nothing like what you are describing at 3 hours, though. The appointments usually take 30-40 minutes.

  • when we were d/c from the NICU we only ever followed up with his pedi (although we eventually saw a cardio for an innocent murmur, PT for torticollis, and an ENT for tubes)... they never told us anything about following up with a neo which I now think seems weird.

  • Once discharged, we never saw the neo team again. Just ped, and specialist referrals from ped.
  • We saw the neonatology team until 2 years, but we had speech and some occupational therapy for a little while after that.

  • We were supposed to do a follow up at 1 year, but they never called and when I called to schedule no one seemed to know what I was talking about.  So we never saw them after discharge.  We did get Early Intervention services once they were discharged that went on until they were about 18 months to make sure they were developing on track.
