I don't get how 50 can be the start of middle aged.
If life expectancy is 80(ish) and your adult life starts around 20, then you're youngish from 20-40, middle aged from 40-60 and old from 60-80 or whatever
The average life expectancy in the US is about 78. I agree that 50 is late to be entering middle aged, but I'm in denial that it starts at 40. I'm still in my early 30s but 40 doesn't seem too far off and I can't imagine myself being in the middle aged age bracket. I'm somewhat surprised by 78 being the average because most old people I know have lived longer than that. Maybe I just know really healthy old people. My dad will be 70 next year and he doesn't seem old to me at all. I think perspective has a lot to do with what you consider middle age or old.

I guess I just think of the term middle aged to mean nearing retirement/empty nester, etc.--not literally RIGHT in the middle of my life. I'll be an empty nester at 50 (unless I keep my babies with me foreverrrr!!!) so I still vote 50!
