Egg allergy

I gave LO part of a scrambled egg yesterday and again for breakfast today and she has broken out all over. :( A few hives and lots of spots. I texted the pedi and she said it was ok just to not give her eggs for at least 6 months. Questions for you ladies: anyone here have a LO allergic to eggs? Could you give him/her food with eggs in it or none whatsoever? What should I do about the rash/hives? Pedi suggested Benadryl but for whatever reason that worries me.

Re: Egg allergy

  • I agree with pp. if he has a true allergy it can be quite severe requiring an epipen etc. I would go to an allergisy

My nephew was allergic to eggs and he couldn't have them in anything.  He had a bunch of allergies and had to see an allergist.  He outgrew most of his allergies (including his egg allergy) by the age of two.  Benedryl has always been the go to medicine if he had an allergic reaction.  When he was 6 months old he had an allergic reaction to rice cereal because the brand my sister bought had powdered milk in it (she didn't realize this or know that he had a milk protein allergy at the time).  He ended up in the hospital and benedryl is what they gave him before anything else.  To this day, she has to carry liquid benedryl with her in case he has a reaction.

I am really late on this, but my DS has an egg allergy.  He had always had eczema, since he was an infant, and just didn't like eggs when we gave them to him.  When he was 2.5 he had a bite of my peanut butter and jelly sandwich and blew up like a balloon - puffy eyes, hives, gagging, etc.  We gave him benadryl and he was ok, but clearly had a peanut allergy.  He then had testing and was also allergic to eggs.  For a while we avoided eggs in anything, but eventually moved to letting him eat baked things with eggs - cookies, baked goods etc.  He has always been fine with it.   We just don't give him egg dishes - scrambled, hard boiled, etc.  I read something about how baking eggs in things will denature the protein that causes the allergy, while cooking an egg doesn't do that (I think that is what I read).  Since he had always done fine, we have kept it up.  He will be going for an allergist appointment soon for retesting.  I am sooo hopeful that he will have outgrown the peanut and egg allergies!!

ETA we have an epipen and benadryl that I carry everywhere.
