Woven Dilemma: Storch v. ???

Hi mamas! I've been posting here and there around AP: I'm a FTM to a 19-pound four-month-old and we've hit a babywearing roadblock of sorts. This is where I need your help :)

DS looooves being worn. It's seriously his favorite thing. However, he is a tank and I'm rather small (5'3 and about 135 pounds). The Boba wrap was our mutual favorite until he got too heavy for it. He loves the Ergo but it doesn't fit me well at all and makes my upper back hurt. I'm renting a size 6 Storch, which is as supportive as the day is long, but it is so stiff that it takes me forever to get it wrapped right.

I'm thinking about trying a BBSlen, but am afraid it won't be supportive enough for my little tank of a baby. Sadly the closest BWing group is an hour away so I'm limited in terms of trying before buying. I'm also kicking around the idea of a different SSC. Any recommendations you could make or experience you could share would be much, much appreciated!

For a belated Fat Thursday, some paczkis for your trouble!

  • On the Ergo, are you wearing him on front or back (I'll admit I don't recall the age to switch)? The ergo kills my back if I wear my daughter on my front but it is awesome on my back. It's a length of torso thing I think.

  • I think it varies a lot.  And wovens soften up the more you use them.  I only have Didy's, but I have a couple different fabrics (full cotton, cotton/hemp, cotton/linen, cotton/wool), and they're all different.  Even some weaves are different.

Is there a babywearing group nearby where you can try out some?

BB Slens are totally supportive.  There's no woven that's not supportive enough for a 19 pound baby :)  Honestly, I find a wrap that's more moldable and easier to wrap with far easier to get comfy than a thick old beast!

A Storch will break in with use and get easier - but certainly there are other options.  I'd ditto the suggestion to hit up the local-ish group - the drive would be worth it if they have lots of stuff to try!
  • Thank you all for the feedback! Once the weather is nicer around here I think I will make the trip to visit the babywearing group. I'm hoping to settle on a woven that will last us into toddlerhood. I tried the Storch again yesterday and the only carry I can get right in it is the FWCC.

  • Yep, a BBSlen would be plenty supportive!

  • Is your Storch a Leo or stripes? Stripes are crazy beastly, and take quite a bit of breaking in. Leos are much easier to break in and use. My Leo (Turkis) is my absolute favorite wrap out of a pretty considerable stash. Perfect for squish-to-toddler, IMO!

That said, BBSlen is awesome, I also might suggest a KoKaDi 100% cotton. Supportive, soft brand new, and just like your favorite snuggly sweatshirt!

  • Thanks again! It's a Storch Stripes (Inka) and it's beautiful but, yes, beastly is a good word for it. I'm leaning toward a Leo or BBSlen but I'll check out KoKaDi (haven't heard of that one yet!). I definitely want to stick with 100% cotton.

  • KoKaDi are really wide. Which can be an issue. I bought a Girasol diamond weave for my first wrap and it is amazing. It's all cotton, not too thick, and has a slight give/stretch. Plus it's cotton so I can throw it in the wash easily. I now have a Nati hemp blend. I'm finding it more difficult to wrap with, but I'm still new to back carries.

  • That's good to know about the diamond weave girasols. I hadn't considered a girasol before because I'd read that they tended to be thicker (and therefore hotter)
