Fever/Temporal Therms

Wondering if any other mommies use temporal therm on their LO's. I noticed LO was a little warmer tonight than usual so I took her temp and it's higher than normal but a degree + under the fever threshold for both rectal and temporal. I'm a nervous nelly FTM and just want to make sure the instructions were right, that a fever in a newborn (1-2 months) on a temporal is 100.7.

Re: Fever/Temporal Therms

  • Idk, but my pedi has always told me for newborns to go by rectal temp as others aren't accurate at this stage.

I was told the same by my pedi too. Rectal is the most accurate way to take a newborns temp. That is the only way I took DS1's temp up until a little over a year old and I will do the same with this LO too.
  • Our pedi does NOT recommend rectal due to risk of perforation. Even the children's hospital urgent care by us uses temporal. They accept temporal, ear, or underarm.

My midwives use temporal, my ped uses rectal. I will be going to the store to get a rectal today, but I don't feel comfortable using it unless she is passed out. I have nobody to help me hold her still if she's squirming and I do worry about it slipping or puncturing or something if she's thrashing around. We have a MW appt today and a peds appt tomorrow. I'll find out the info.

  • When DS was hospitalized for a fever, the doctors would only go by rectal temp because it's most accurate.
