Tongue tie clipped. Now what??

I posted a few days ago that my LO had tongue and lip ties and we were going to a dr to get it corrected. We did the procedure yesterday. (I had to hold his head still and mouth open!)

He is def latching better and spending much more time suckling at the breast which is great. But he's still not really transferring. (I rented a scale last week when things started to go south.)

Now my goal is to get him to actually transfer! I'm seeing an LC later this week but wondered if anyone had any tips. I was told his suck was strong tho a little unorganized. I'm still pace feeding w bottles to make sure he is fed. I give bottle, breast bottle breast.

Thanks ladies!
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

  • Practice, practice, practice! Get him on there as often as possible and minimize the bottle, that will help. In my case, we had the outer part of the tonuge clipped but it was still 'tied' underneath the tongue and it had to be released with a laser procedure. An LC should be able to help you assess that.

  • Did they tell you about doing stretching exercises...massaging the area where it was clipped?  There is also a Facebook group for tongue ties, they probably have more suggestions.
  • I have been at this for weeks, now. The routine will drive you crazy. Do not make the same mistake I did and get stuck on bottle feedings and religious pumping. I mean, do what you need to do to keep your supply in the right ballpark but really focus on practicing at the breast. Today, I met with a lactation consultant for the third time. We still aren't sure exactly how much my little guy is transferring (he has been satiated prior to weighed feedings - I just can't seem to get the timing right for our appointments). Even though he was satiated he did transfer 2/3 of an ounce today with minimal sucking, so the LC, knowing I am at the end of our rope, just told me to go for it - a 24 hour trial of all breast unless it is clear he really needs supplement. He has been attached to my boobs all day now and the world did not fall apart (at least not yet). I did have to give him about 3 ounces of supplemental breastmilk this afternoon because he seemed like he needed it, but so far we are hanging in there. Given we are going on 8 weeks (he had his second frenectomy a week ago, and that one took better than the one they did at 4 weeks) this is my final hurrah before throwing in the towel on direct breastfeeding before moving on to exclusive pumping and combination feeding. It was all becoming way too stressful on me and my family. And I return to work in a month. My entire maternity leave so far has been focused on feeding him, and we need some happier less stressful weeks.
  • Thanks for your insight @jj1973! Hopeful things work for you in the way you want!!
