Help! How to Up Milk Supply Naturally?

(Sorry if this has been discussed. You can direct me to the previous threads)

With DD1 I bf for 8-10 months but I started supplementing at 1 month and bf was just comfort and not food by about 6 months. She loved it but I didn't have milk for her.

With this LO I want to try to do better. I was considering taking Fenugreek about 2 weeks before I deliver to help. Did any of you have problems and then tried something to up your supply and it worked??? I would love some seasoned advice!

**I do work full time, but I would be happy to try and pump (though I hated it last time) instead of give formula. And here we are allowed to go home to bf for 1 hr during the day and finish at 1pm for the first 8 months of baby's life.**

Re: Help! How to Up Milk Supply Naturally?

  • I've been drinking what seems like an absurd amount of water along with double serving of steel cut oats for breakfast and pumping every 2 hours. Supply has been improved since starting this. I'm also interested if any of the seeds they recommend have helped anyone

  • Drink a gallon of water a day!
  • You could try fenugreek. Or buy some mothers milk tea.

  • Yes, I was just reading about Fenugreek so I will wait until I deliver. She didn't gain weight well the first 3 months. She went from 30% to 5% and wouldn't go back up. Her doctor wasn't happy. I thought maybe her latch was poor as I had serious bleeding (nipple looked to be tearing off) on the right side. When she was 3 months I saw a LC and she said the latch was fine and she was getting 3oz per feed at that time.

  • @casey78 Thanks for the support. We don't have LCs here as I am on contract in Botswana (Africa) so last time I had to wait until we visited the US. This time we won't be visiting the US. I hope things are easier this time and I will look up that other thread. thanks!

    Is there any way you can connect with a group of local women to help you? Before lactation consultants, women received breastfeeding support from their community. This still happens in communities where breastfeeding is the norm.

    You can also try to find a lactation consultant who will do a long distance consult. You can send a video or meet via FaceTime or Skype.

  • I think it will be helpful if you get in touch with a bclc so you can both decide on what methods might work for you.
  • I have been trying to think if there are local women to talk to, but unfortunately this culture doesn't seem to discuss birthing/breastfeeding/diapering at all. It is more like your mom and  grandma tell you what to do and you obey.

    Teachers at work did try and help last time, but I don't think they are that knowledgeable.

    @eves1989 What is a BCLC?
