C-sections

Older children during csection

I'm having a RCS next month and am curious what you all plan on doing with your older children (especially if you have a small family/support system) while you're in the hospital?

My csection is planned at 10am, so we're either going to taking them to daycare (they're 4 yo twins) first OR have drop them off at my mom's house on the way to the hospital.  If we do the latter, than my mom won't be able to come to the hospital to visit me until later in the afternoon as I don't want my kids in there too early so that they don't see me all out of it.  But, if they go to daycare, that means DH will have to leave me by 3pm to go get the kids and bring them back.

If all goes according to plan, the rest of the week will be easy since the surgery's planned for a Monday and the kids can go to daycare for a few hours as to not disturb their routine and then come and visit me and the baby later. DH will be doing a lot of driving around, but thats ok.

How are you handling any similar situations?

Re: Older children during csection

  • When we had our c/s earlier this month I did have my mom stay with our 2 older boys.  They weren't able to come until a little later but it was nice to just have some time with just me, DH and the new baby. Since being home we haven't really gotten that time to just us 3. =) HTH

I understand your concern. I wanted my mom at the hospital. Lucky for us we use a home daycare for DD and DS1 is in school. My daycare provided offered to keep the kids as late as needed. My neighbor dropped DS at DD's daycare when school got out. My c was at 9 but I was bumped until 11.

Could your mom pick the others up at daycare for you? Mine came to the hospital then left and picked the other 2 up and brought them to see the baby.
  • My c/s (well, attempted EVD) was scheduled for a Tuesday at noon.  DS (3 yo at the time) stayed home from daycare with my parents that day and the rest of the week.  It might have been better if he had gone to daycare, come to think of it.

  • This is not a popular opinion but this last time (3 weeks ago), the bigs stayed with my mom and ILs for a full week. They were supposed to come visit us in the hospital but b/c of snow/ice and DD having strep throat- that didn't happen. I missed them but seriously this recovery has been soooooo easy! I really believe it is b/c I rested for a full week and really took the time to heal. My advice is to double the help you think you'll need. DH and I both ended up with strep throat last week with a 2 week old. Once again, our parents had to come to the rescue and take the bigs for the weekend while I recovered from that.

  • My plan is to drop DS at daycare the morning of my c-section.  Then my mom and DH can both be at the hospital with me, and my mom will leave to go pick up DS and bring him home to our house.  DH will go home later that evening to relieve her.  We don't normally pick DS up though until around 5/5:30.  I'll have DS come visit us once I'm showered and able to move around again...I also don't want him coming when I'm still all out of it and stuck in the bed.

  • When I had my c-section, my mom stayed with my two older girls, and came the next day.  I was fine the day of, and if they came out then, that would have been fine too.

This time, if I end up with a c-section (I am hoping for a VBAC), I will have them come out the same day or day after.  I didn't have a difficult recovery at all, I was up walking around within 4 hours of her birth.
