Teachers who pump

I know that there are a few other teachers here, do any of you pump or plan to? If so when do you do it and where? I'm having trouble fitting it into my day.

Re: Teachers who pump

  • I'm not back to work yet but am already wondering about this. What I'm hoping is to nurse in the mornings before I leave, then pump during morning recess, about ten am. I'm lucky in that I live near enough to school that I can go home at lunch to nurse her and then I'll just rush home again at the end of the day. But it's going to be hard to swing with meetings and things that come up at lunch and recess times and I have no idea where I could go to pump at school - maybe the nurse's office? I want this to work cause I'd like to keep nursing into next school year but I don't know if it will. Would love to hear how other people have made it happen.

  • I'm also not returning to work, but I did a lot of research into pumping at work. Our contract states that BF mothers be given a place and coverage to pump. It also says each school building must have a refrigerator that is for BM only. Check your contract and see what it says! My friend and I ( she just had her baby and will be returning to work for the last 2 weeks of school) had to tell our administrator what the contract says about this. Good luck!

  • I return to school on the 17th. I EP, so I plan to do it while I get ready around 5:30, then during my students specials around 8:30, during my 20 min lunch at 11, and then after school around 3:15. It's all going to vary though, based on the day. I can also pump during my 15 min recess at 1:30, but two days a week I have duty. I also have no special Friday mornings, so I will have to pump before school starts around 7:45. With staff meeting and such I will just kinda go with the flow. I was worried at first, but we will see how it goes once I'm there. It may not be horrible for me since I'm so used to pumping at this point.

@alwaysadream528 isn't it illegal for them to change your pay because of breast feeding? I know here, leagally they have to allow you to pump as you need throughout the day.

  • I am not returning this school year and part of the reason is a pumping issue. I teach MS math and work from 7:30 to 11:30 straight then have a 20 min lunch. My school offered to bring in someone to teach so I could pump between 7:30 and 11:30, but the pay for this person would be deducted from my pay. At this point I'm not willing to give up on my Breastfeeding of DS and the pay deduction along with paying for daycare would eliminate any pay I do make.

I teach sped and I have a similar schedule I teach from 8:40 to 11:50. Then I have prep and lunch until 1 and teach until 3:10. So all I have is before school, lunch/prep, and after school. I hope that enough long term.

  • I teach high school. I plan to nurse around 7am, pump right before work at like 830, pump at lunch at 1230, pump at the end of my planning around 230, and then nurse at 430 after school.

  • They have to allow you to pump. I would suggest going in and talking with your administrator a little while before heading back. Hopefully they will help you work out a schedule that is good for everyone, even if it means you take an extra break. Good luck!

  • As a former HS teacher, i know when I returned to school after having ds, pumping was extremely difficult. I only had to pump 4 weeks before summer vacation, and I didn't make it. Slowly, but surely, my "pumping" times got shorter and shorter-mostly with meetings and things I needed to get done because I was out. My advice, never skip a pump! Once I did, people expected it to be ok if I skipped it again. I used a faculty bathroom, and spoke to the ladies who usually used the bathroom, so they knew what times I would be pumping and why there was a chair in there! As for storage, I brought a separate lunch box and kept it in the fridge in the faculty room. Good luck!

I don't go back until mid-May and for only three weeks. I will have to pump first thing in the morning, 7:30-7:45. Then when my kids go to fine arts (I totally forgot my schedule and what time they go but it is my 35 minute planning - I left for bed rest mid-Sept). I hope to get another teacher to take my kids to recess and at lunch. Then after school at 2:05 if I don't have car duty (or again try to get someone else). After school meetings usually start at 2:30 and I can leave at 3. That is the plan, but it never works that way. I still need to pee, plan, eat, run copies, etc. hopefully not too much will be going on the last three weeks to take me away from pumping. As for August, she will be 7 months and I only plan to bf until 6 months.

  • I'm also in Illinois and my contract only states needing a place to pump which will be my classroom or I can use the teacher's bathroom which has an extra room with couches. I prefer the privacy of my locked classroom and can sit in the back away from the door. I'm not going back til next school year though which will get me past my six month goal.

I'm looking for a new job so who knows what my schedule will be. If I end up going back to my current position, and my schedule is the same, I'd get up to nurse at 5:30 when I got up, pump at 8 when I get to school, pump at noon during my lunch, and then pump on my commute home around 4.

  • You teaching ladies are awesome!  I stress about retuning to my desk job and non-stop conference calls but I can pump during a call if I have to, I'm guessing they frown on doing that in front of a classroom ;)

  • I go back mid April and will plan on pumping first thing in the AM, nursing before drop off, pumping before school around 7:30, again at specials (10:30), lunch time (11:30 for me, possibly wait until 12:00 for the kids if I can get coverage), after school at 3:00 ish and nurse when I pick up DS around 4:30/5 and for the rest of the evening (unless I have meetings, then pump and bottle). We'll see how it goes and how the times go. We have no where to pump except our rooms so I will lock my door and shut blinds (window to the playground- yikes!) and do it there. I usually carpool but for the remainder of this year I'm just going to drive alone so if I were to ever need to leave I can easily do that. Good luck everyone! Maybe we can check back in with each other when we go back for tips...

  • I'm jealous of all you ladies who have the keys to your classrooms. I asked my principal for mine since she keeps them in the main office on the wall and I don't know which one is mine and she promptly found another room for me. However, it's in the main office and I feel really awkward using it.

  • I've been back to work for three weeks now and have been pumping. I teach kinder and find that if I feed Sophia right before I drop her off at daycare, I can then pump during my lunch and right after I dismiss. I pump in my classroom with the lights off, my door locked, and a sign that says "do not disturb....nursing mom". If I don't feed her right before, I pump while driving or I do a very quick pump session before school starts. Good luck!
  • I teach high school and will be returning in two weeks.  My plan is to pump/feed before I leave for work in the morning.  I have a prep period at 9:00 am, lunch at 12:00, and another period at the end of the day without students at 2:00 p.m.  I am thinking I will pump at each of those times for about 10-15 minutes.  So far I have been pumping more volume than I need each day so I am hoping my supply will stay the same at work.  Luckily, there are only a couple months left in the school year to get through before summer break.

  • I went back right after my son was born to save my FMLA time for when he came home. So, I pumped at 5 when I woke up, at 7:30, 9:45, 11:30, and then 2 on one day. On the other day, I did 5:00, 9:00, 12, and 2. Now I'm part time bc my son still isn't home so I pump at 6, 8:30 when I get to work, and the either 11:30 or 12 depending on what day it is.

Our school library has a back room that used for pumping when ladies need it. One of my friends just uses her office. My principal doesn't ever want to talk about "lady problems" so he just says to do whatever I need to do. I pump during my free periods or when I'm coteaching. I had a sub come in during my study hall last semester.
  • I go back in two weeks and I plan to feed before work and then maybe pump right before school 8:30, and then Lunch at noon and prep at 1:40, I might be able to get someone to come in around 11 so I don't have such a long stretch in the morning but I won't know until I go back
  • I'm going back April 1, and my plan is, nurse around 6am, when he usually wakes up, before school around 8, lunch at 11:15, plan at 1, nurse when I get home around 4:30.
