BF STM: which Vitamin D drop are you going to use?

I used Baby D drops with #1 because I could simply with 1 hand put 1 drop on my nipple. https://www.amazon.com/Baby-Ddrops®-400-IU-drops/dp/B003CT36NE/ref=reg_hu-br_mrai-recs

However, now I am thinking the Nodric naturals Vitamin D with DHA. It looks more like a dropper bottle which might be harder with one hand but it has the DHA in it. https://www.amazon.com/Nordic-Naturals-Babys-Dha-Ounce/dp/B003DYQ59U/ref=reg_hu-br_item-added

Any other recomendations?

  • I don't remember what we used. Something basic, I'm sure. But I do like the idea of added DHA.

  • I used the Enfamil vitamin D drops last time.  I was thinking of trying Carlson this time, most of the ladies on the BF board seem to have good things to say about them.

No, even if mom has levels that are OK, exclusively breastfed babies still need vitamin D supplements to prevent rickets.  Formula has added vitamin D so supplements aren't necessary.

I can't remember the specific brands we used but I definitely recommend the ultra-concentrated 1 drop kind over the full-syringe dose kind. We used the latter until DS1 aspirated it and had a major scary choking fit. When I looked into it, I found that was fairly common, so we switched to the 1-drop dose and never had an issue.

  • I wouldn't say every baby needs vitamin D supplements.
From the CDC's website:"Vitamin D deficiency rickets among breastfed infants is rare, but it can occur if an infant does not receive additional vitamin D from a vitamin supplement or from adequate exposure to sunlight."
So I think you just need to weigh your lifestyle. Babies/human bodies are made to take in vitamin D from food and from the sun. BF babies will get part of their vitamin D intake from breast milk and part from the sun. If they aren't in the sun at all, or are covered up, ect then it could possibly lead to issues.

Me too, seriously. Also, the CDC says this is legit. I sure hope some medical professional was going to bring this up to me eventually. I did google for it easily, but how do most people know you're supposed to google for it?
Well considering none of our babies are here yet, there's plenty of time for it to come up!  Last time, it was DD's pedi who told me at her 3-4 day/post-discharge appt I believe.

  • OP - I used the D-drops last time and was planning to use them again this time though I like the idea of the added DHA.  I'll have to remember to ask the pedi what they recommend.

I used the baby d drops and plan to again. I've never heard of the others you mentioned though. As long as they're one drop I might give it a try. Like PP said, the whole syring thing was a nightmare when we first tried it.

This is what we used... until Shorty kicked over the majority of the bottle when she was about 2 months old. It's kinda expensive and it was starting to be summer, so I laid her in the sun and skipped the supplements.

I also have never heard of this so early! I take 4000mg of vit d myself and plan to EBF and pump so it is recommended to add additional vit d for infants even if the mother has a lot and ideal levels? Although I can definitely see the plus to just putting the drop on your nipple for them.

  • I'm using Carlson drops. I can't imagine trying to get a whole dropper full in there so young.

I had no clue either. Let's play "when will a medical professional tell me this" haha

  • I also had no clue until I read it in the baby book by dr sears. In there they mentioned if mama takes high doses of vit d 4000-6000 iu that it would pass to baby. I think even though I've been on 4000 iu this pregnancy and will continue once he's here ill still give him the drops.

So you just put a drop on your nipple before you feed? I was wondering how id give it to him

  • Darn edit button isn't working on mobile bump but

Has abyone heard of taking extra calcium supplements on top of pnv while breastfeeding? The dr sears book recommends it if you have a hard time getting 400 iu into you through dairy products (I have a mild dairy allergy so I stay away)....

haha, seriously ladies, who is supposed to tell you this that you think you're missing some huge piece of info?  Your OB has no idea if you plan on BFing and it's really not their business either way since it has nothing to do with pregnancy.

Chances are, if you're going to get the info from someone, it will be from the pediatrician after you've had the baby. Chill.

And like a PP pointed out - not all pedis will recommend it depending on where you live, the season, etc.  I assume I was told about it last time because it was December in Massachusetts.  So not a lot of time spent in the sun.

My sons Dr never mentioned this and I never used any drops. Don't plan on using them this time either unless needed. We will be doing lots of outdoor time through the summer and fall.

  • My 1st ped mentioned it because I live in Chicago and do not have a lot of sun all year. 1 drop of vitamin D isn't to much work.

With the Carlson's Vit. D drops (Baby D drops) it is just a drop that you put on your nipple before feeding (or on a clean finger, or pacifier, or in a bottle).
