Anyone using baby wise or EASY for LO sleep

I really want to help LO sleep better. I have been wanting to get the book 'becoming baby wise' but it has some very mixed reviews on it's techniques. Another technique suggested was from the book 'baby whisperer' which I think has the EASY technique.

I am contemplating getting one of these books as I have a LO who will not sleep more than an hour and half round the clock. I would really like to introduce a way to get him to at least sleep 3 hours at night. Heck I'll even take 2 hours at this point. I am desperate to introduce some of these techniques so that I can bring him to a good sleep cycle.

Anyone using or have used any sleep techniques listed in the mentioned books successfully? Is it worth even trying or is it pointless as LO is a month old and will eventually sleep? My fear is by not inculcating some of these so called 'habits' I may be setting him up to be bad with sleep.

I know a lot of us are struggling with sleep and at this stage it's expected but I am just very curious to know if anyone has used advice from these books and if it has worked.

Re: Anyone using baby wise or EASY for LO sleep

  • I was given The Baby Whisperer, and so far I'm not impressed. It's hard to tell a 3 week old baby that he 'should' be eating every 3 hours and playing for 45 minutes. The author recommends starting right away with babies. And she does not approve of the swing, which everyone tells me is a life saver. She also has an annoying habit of calling the reader 'luv', and to me at least, seems a bit patronizing.

I'll finish the book though, and then decide. I love the idea of having R on a schedule, for both our sakes. But right now it doesn't sit right with me.

  • I'm happy to read several books, and then go with what makes sense to me. I like the tips and theories, but I'm not one to follow just one book. I'm interested to check out Babywise. My dad was just clearing out my grandmas house, and found a baby book she must have gotten when he was born, published in 1949. I'm interested to read that too, just for kicks.

I think with EASY, it's important for all of us to remember the Y step... And take a bit of time for ourselves (easier said than done of course)

  • I read and follow baby wise with my older son and also I'm going to use it for this one too. He eats every 3 hours at the same time each day. If you want more info let me know and I will give you way more information. I think it really works well!

  • We did Baby Whisperer for round 1, five years ago. This time around we're following baby more, so I don't think we'll focus on EASY for another few weeks (he's 2.5 weeks now). It just doesn't make sense for the first few weeks because of milk coming in and sleepy babies, but I do find he's moving towards his own schedule already. I do try and make sure LO is awake for at least a few hours each day (in tiny increments) so he will sleep better at night.

FWIW, we have never used a swing and never missed it. But I know it is a lifesaver for some.

The tone of Baby Whisperer was annoying but I liked her 'baby is a person' approach.
  • I haven't read either book- but I did read "Cherish the First Six Weeks" which helped me put LO on somewhat of a feeding schedule (obviously if he screams to eat and it's not "time" I still feed him though I find this almost never happens). Like any book, you have to take the good with the bad. My baby is six weeks and I'm definitely not at her 6 week baby schedule yet and also trying to pat and shush him in the middle of the night will do nothing for my baby because he is hungry :)

As for the EASY thing- my LO has fallen into this pretty naturally without me really doing much. However, 2 weeks ago, he was still falling asleep after a lot of his feedings so I'm not sure if it would've worked then.

  • Not exactly sure why, but I hated the Babywise book.  The schedule was just too much, but I did like the routine aspect of it. Also, can you just check the books out from your local library instead of purchasing them? Then you could read them and know if it's something worth spending your $ on.

Sigh! If only I had the time and energy to walk to the library. :-( I thought about that. Maybe I can convince DH to do it for me.

  • @wildflower exactly what it wanted to hear. My concern was it's on purchasing the books but rather taking the effort to read and try the programs. If I keep a general order of things then would it be worth putting myself and LO through this. I would if it really works in helping him sleep better. But your right. I'm on week 4 and he seems to be mildly better naturally but I've read so many horror stores about bad sleeping habits that I'm worried if I don't start early I'll be stuck in a rut. By early I mean 2-3 months onwards.
