WWYD Naps

edited March 2014 in May 2013 Moms
LO is sleepng better at nights...but naps are still not going well.  We might get 45 min the whole day.  He definitely seems tired all the time...lots of yawning and eye rubbing and I was committed to sleep training and have been training for about a week and a half for naps but yesterday's "session" was the worst...LO was screaming and crying and  I basically started dry heaving.
Today he is barely napping but it actually feels better than yesterday because there are no hysterics.
I am torn about this.  Part of me feels like a bad mother for nap training because it is torturous for LO and seemingly not working but I also feel like maybe it is bad to throw in the towel and just accept that he doesn't nap and is tired a lot.
Any advice?
(p.s.I have tried some interval visits and extinction - with up to an hour for the nap attempt)

Re: WWYD Naps

  • I agree with Petra about a strict schedule. We did Ferber for naps to get her to go to sleep on her own and that has helped her go for a cat nap to 2 hour naps. All the Ferber was worth the end result of her being rested and a much happier baby overall.

  • No advice here really I struggle too....I stick to a schedule same times etc at home and half the time hell just talk and play in his crib and then eventually fall asleep. He doesnt cry but yeah the most I usually get out of him is an hour after he actually falls asleep. 1.5 on random times.
  • I'd like to keep to a schedule, but I am struggling with what that schedule should be.  Knock wood, he is consitent with bedtime at 7 and waking at 7.    I was trying for naps at 10 and 2, but today at 10 we went through our routine and then he was just standing smiling in the crib and I knew if I left him, he would just be screaming, so I took him out and then at 11 he went down easy.  Other days, he has fallen asleep ok at 9:30. So it really seems to vary when he is tired.  That is one of the things that is stressing me out, because I really don't know when to put him down, and I hate the idea of leaving him when he really isn't ready for a nap.
How did you choose your schedule?

  • Why don't you just try for one nap a day at 12 or 1pm?

  • I've been traveling, so I wanted to say yay for better night times for you, @coffeeandbooks ! I have no advice for naps though. I can't figure out a schedule either.
  • I found that C does better with his naps if I can get him down before he's too sleepy. He sleeps all night and is usually ready for a nap 1.5 hours or so after he wakes up. This is his longest nap of the day (2-2.5 hours). Sometimes he doesn't seem very sleepy but when I put him in his crib, he falls asleep pretty quickly. Maybe try putting him down for a nap a little earlier, maybe around 9 or maybe even a little earlier and see if that helps any. I also struggled to know when to put him down for a nap but I read somewhere that they can be ready for their first nap within 1.5 hours or so after waking and it worked for us.
  • Thanks, guys, for all your help here.  I am taking this one day at a time now.   This morning, LO gave me the clearest sign I ever got that he was ready for a nap- he laid down and started cuddling with his sleep sack.  I hope he always gives me that clear a signal!  Thanks for all your T&Ps.

I found paying attention to time was easier than waiting for a signal. I found my DD wouldn't give me a sign until it was too late and she was over tired. Hope the napping gets better for you. It can be so tough sometimes.

  • DD has been fighting naps too. I wait for a que, and then put her to bed. If she is constantly fussy, I give her a bottle, and then try the swing. The last week the swing has been a lifesaver. My pedi also recommended I up her bottle an ounce extra, and see if that helps with sleeping.
