Breastfeeding

a little confused..FTM

This might be a silly question...I plan on breastfeeding and was wondering does the baby always take from both breasts? For some reason I thought you start feeding baby from one side then the next feeding time a few hours later you give baby the other breast? And does baby just stop when full?

Re: a little confused..FTM

  • I actually didn't know about the "rule" to feed from both sides, and just went on instinct. At the very beginning, I'd feed from one side for awhile until he either unlatched (after lots of comfort nursing), or until I couldn't stand the feeling anymore, and needed to switch. Despite feeding this way, I still ended up with a bit of an oversupply for the first couple of months, and didn't start feeding from both sides until my supply regulated and then dipped in the summer months (DS was born in March) due to dehydration.

DS now usually takes both sides, but occasionally will only take one at a time. He almost always takes one side per feed during night feeds.

  • I didn't think of this until my DD was born. I fed her on the left first and then the other side. I didn't keep track of the time but I just know when DD is full or she's not getting enough.
  • @casey78 gave you some really great advice. Each baby is different and as you get to know your baby you will learn what they need.
