Help! LO caught a cold...

And it may have been my fault cause I caught one 2 days ago...

He has a horrible cough and I hear phlegms when he breathes. I will take him to the doctor tomorrow but now it's 3 am here and he has been waking up every hour screaming and complaining.

Any advice on what can make him feel better? He had a slight fever last night and now he was actually colder than normal... :(

Poor guy, I feel so helpless...

TIA

  • Steam the bathroom up, sleep him on an angle.  Good luck!

  • Loading the player...
  • Is his breathing labored? Is his chest rising and falling more than normal? If his breathing is fine and it's just congestion, then I'd suggest a cool mist humidifier, suction his nose, and give Tylenol or Ibuprofen for discomfort. At this age elevating the crib mattress doesn't work because they always end up facing downhill, but if he sleeps better elevated, let him sleep in his car seat. Sleepless nights suck, but tomorrow will likely be better.

  • Thank you! He just woke up for the 4th time and went back to sleep in my arms. I think he likes the change in position (elevated head)

I will try the bathroom solution next time he wakes up. His breathing is labored but his chest looks normal.

Yesterday I knew something bad was coming because he didn't want to eat and refused the breast for the first time... He did eat before going to sleep but before that he was almost fasting.

  • Aww poor dude. If he has nasal congestion you can use saline to loosen along with steamed up bathroom. Suction.. Cool most humidifier is lovely. Ask your pedi their guidelines for using Tylenol. Ours said only if fever got to certain point or if baby seemed miserable. If LO doesn't seem to be able to eat well your pedi might recommend pedialyte. It can help keep them hydrated.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Babies get sick, it's inevitable. I know how helpless we feel as mommies!! I hope he is feeling better soon!

  • Thanks ladies, we made it through the night. He is not very well but at least he is eating again, I put a vaporizer close to his crib and when he is napping.
