Reflux Mommas, what does LO sleep in?

I'm considering trying some new sleeping positions for DS2 to see if I can get him to sleep longer/more comfortably at night.  I have his bassinet on an incline by putting a blanket under the mattress at one end.  There's no real safe way to just slope the whole bassinet.  He usually sleeps 2 hours for his first stretch in the bassinet then 1-1.5 hours (usually 1 hour) for the rest of the night.  I'm pretty sure it's the silent reflux waking him because he just wants to nurse a little bit and then he's content and falls back asleep. Even if I fully wake him he won't continue to eat. I would love to be able to get consistent 2 hour stretches (or longer!) since he's 7 weeks.
What does your LO sleep in? I'm wondering if I should buy a RnP or bouncy chair to try him in at night but worry they might just curl him up so he won't sleep well.  He's already 13.5 lb and 25 inches long so might be close to outgrowing a RnP?

  • J is about the same size and in RNP. He looks kind of long for it. I borrowed mine from a friend though. Maybe ask around first?

RnP here. We borrowed one but check craigslist for one. I've seen them for super cheap there. She's also a peanut and has awhile before she outgrows it. I've seen someone here mention possibly getting a tucker sling for the crib. Could be worth checking out although they are pricey but its a more long term solution.
  • Ollie is a peanut and sleeps in the RNP. Before we got one he was the same way as your LO, because of reflux, and the only way he could sleep for an extended period of time/not sound like he was going to choke to death was sleeping on his belly on my chest with me propped up with pillows. Definitely give the RNP a shot.

  • Sometimes he naps in the car seat, but mostly we just hold him upright for half an hour after each meal.
  • I have a wedge under his crib mattress (plus an angelcare because I'm paranoid like that). He still spits up, but it is the best option for now. I am not comfortable with the RnP for overnight sleeping (I have read it isn't approved for that purpose, plus the flat head thing; I do use it for naps when I can watch him).

  • RnP. DS sleeps at least one 6-7 hour stretch.

P.S. I'm so tired of hearing about the flat head thing. That is a risk for leaving your baby in the same position for prolonged periods in ANYTHING.. Crib, car seat, bassinet, PNP, everything.

  • Swing. The motion helps keep him asleep or lull him back from stirring awake. We've had a 6 hour night thanks to it! (We use a full size Fisher Price swing that goes side to side)

DD sleeps in a bassinet beside our bed. Even though it is flat it is where she sleeps best and at least I am right there if she spits up or has breathing difficulties.

  • Buy a RNP. The majority of babies do not reach the 25lb weight limit for quite some time and even when they do, they're close to crawling/walking and stay that weight for several months. All of my kids were/are off the charts for weight and height and still made it in the RNP for 6 months. You actually would have to worry more about rolling/trying to sit up before weight.

Also, the RNP is great for reflux babies (DS2 had it bad.) I think you'll find it's worth its weight in gold.

  • DD doesn't have painful reflux but she does have issues with choking and waking herself from the hiccups if she's flat on her back. She sleeps in a RnP and it really is worth its weight in gold like @mrsjenni said.

Mine is borrowed but I'm most likely going to buy my own since the friend who loaned it to me has a nephew on the way who will need it soon and I plan to just go with the RnP from day 1 with future littles.

  • Thanks everyone.  I just looked on the website and apparently they don't sell the RNP in Canada.  Crap.  Going to the US to buy one right now just isn't in the cards for me.
I'm not sure what the next best option is for him.  They have a FP "Newborn to Toddler Portable Rocker"

Do you think this would work? I think the downside compared to a RNP is it doesn't snuggle them as much from the sides.
The other option is to look for a bouncy chair that has a 30 degree angle and a deep seat.
We have a FP Rainforest swing that he naps during the day in in our living room, but again he only goes 1-2 hours at a time.

  • Are there no websites that ship to Canada? Amazon, BRU, BBB, etc? That's insane to me.

  • I'm looking to see if I can get it shipped to Canada.  It looks like FP doesn't sell it in Canada, but I'm not sure if it is banned (like walkers) or just not available.
Do you guys just have the regular one or the platinum lamb one with the inserts?

  • I am in Canada and the RnP was removed from the market. I have one from before they took it off the market but they banned it because of the flat head issue (I did notice this with my first as we used it more with him and it improved once we moved him to the crib). I don't know why our rules differ from the US but sometimes they do.

With other baby gear I would just make sure it doesn't curl then forward too much. I know one of our bouncy seats does (summer infant?). It is okay for short spurts of setting him down but would be problematic for over night.

@coppertop we have the snugamonkey one. I think it's worth the extra money rather than the basic one. I read that some moms who bought the basic ones, put a receiving blanket between the board and the fabric to give it a little more cushion.

  • Another question. Do you use a soother to help with the reflux? I have avoided them for both kids. DS1 didn't have reflux so this is all new to me.
Dr Sears' website mentions that they can help some reflux babies out. I would be tempted to try if it will help him sleep more than an hour at night.

Are you talking about a pacifier?

  • @cnctf - yes, a pacifier.  My parents always called them soothers so it stuck with me.

I did talk to the pedi about cutting dairy.  She said I could try but to try to Zantac first to see if that cleared it up.  I have reduced my dairy but not completely cut it.  I don't drink milk, eat yogurt or cottage cheese or cheese.  But I haven't gone as far as looking into every ingredient on foods to make sure there is no dairy.  The pedi said because there was no blood in his stool that chances are he doesn't have a strong allergy.

He is so congested at night I have to use saline nose drops every couple of hours or else he gets almost completely clogged up and will sometimes start to cough to try to clear his nose it seems.  He also madly rubs his face and ears when he gets all congested.  I run a cool mist humidifier in the bedroom at night but that seems to make little difference.

Ok, just making sure. I'm a FTM so idk if a paci helps with reflux or not, but if you read that it helps, I say give it a try. When the nurses have DD a paci at the hospital, I told S/O that I didn't want DD to use a paci, but all that has changed now. DD comfort sucks and what I would do for her to be satisfied from the paci..
