Fraternal twin size discordance

Hi ladies, My girls are fraternal twins. I had an us yesterday at 24w 3d, baby a measured 1lb 6oz (22%); b measured 1lb, 12oz (70%). At 20 weeks they were only an ounce apart. The MFM didn't think 6 oz was a big deal, just that the percentages seem so huge. They looked at cord flow and that all seemed ok. I have to go back in 3 weeks instead if 4. I have an OB appt this afternoon, are there any questions I should be asking? Any advice on this? Thanks!

My boys are fraternal and they started to measure different in weight after about twenty weeks. At one point they measured over a pound different. My MFM and OB weren't concerned. The boys were exactly 2 pounds different at birth. I say it never hurts to ask if you're concerned.

  • Sounds a lot like my di/di boys. They continued to get further apart until 34 weeks. However when they were born they were only a pound apart. The u/s estimates are just that. Just estimates. And can be off. As long as the cord flow is good and your OB is still comfortable with the growth and you are as well I wouldn't worry too much. Now in the outside my boys are about 2 pounds to 1.5 pounds apart but it hasn't caused any other health issues besides Colton is just smaller.

  • I did. They induced at 33 and 6. They labeled him IUGR and figured it was more beneficial to grow on the outside rather than inside.

Similar to pp - my boys started measuring farther apart as the weeks progressed. As they grow, it's harder to get accurate measurements bc of space issues.

Mine were 1/2lb different at birth and now at 8mo are about 1.5lbs different. My little guy is just little, that's all. My water broke at 34w but there was no discussion of delivery early due to the little one being little.

I should also add that they were both good sizes for 34w, even the little one. They were 5lbs and 5lbs 8pz

  • Our b/g twins have measured differently from the very beginning - baby boy has always measured larger.  At our 22wk2d appt., baby boy measured about 3 oz larger than baby girl (it was a 5 oz difference at the appt. before that, so maybe she's catching up!).  My OB said the size difference doesn't concern them, since both are still within normal range - they're just keeping a closer eye on baby girl, to make sure that she continues to grow at a steady rate.  it helps that they both have their own sacs and placentas, so there's no issue with one taking from the other.

  • Our di/di boy/girl twins measure quite differently. One of the drs in my practice freaked me out at 26 weeks and said she would pull me from work if a second ultrasound didn't show them closer (thankfully it did). My fav OB though just told us at 30 weeks that she isn't worried about the discrepancy. You have to remember they're only siblings. You wouldn't compare a second singleton as closely as we do fraternal twins even though that's pretty much what they are. Our dr made the point that it's more about each of them growing on their own curve so I would monitor the smaller ones growth closer but as long as he continues to get bigger I wouldn't worry too much.
  • My di/di girl/boy twins always measured differently. My doctor said they didn't worry unless the difference became over 25% between them (not percentile) when they were born the boy was 1 lb larger but both did great. They were born at 34 weeks so they both needed some nicu time but came home on the same day.

FWIW they missed the weight of my singleton by 2lbs, estimated to be 10lbs and was 8lbs.
  • I know they're just estimates and the OB wasn't worried at all. At least not yet. So I guess until they start to worry, I'm not going to either.

  • Yesterday, my OB measured my twins at 1lb apart at 30 weeks.  He said it was absolutely nothing to worry about, that the measurements aren't exact, and they're based on tables that aren't exact, so not to worry a bit.  They still both looked great and healthy, lots of movement, nothing to be concerned about.
