14 month old nap problems!

I don't know what it is but I cannot figure out when to put LO down! Every time I do I am met with hyperventilating screaming and crying. He goes down for bed just fine, talks to himself for a bit and then that's it but nap times are killing me. It's like he wants to sleep at a different time every day or something. I've tried laying him down at the same time everyday and nothing but screams, I've tried laying him down when he's tired but not over tired and nothing but screams and I've tried laying him down when he's over tired and again nothing but screams! I don't know if I should take him out or just let him cry it out until he falls asleep but it's killing me, I hate hearing him cry like this but he's just so tired. It's been nearly an hour of on and off crying and whenever I go in there to comfort him and rub his tummy to calm him down the second I leave he starts crying even harder than he was initially. I just don't know what to do about it! Any advice or similar situations are greatly appreciated!

Re: 14 month old nap problems!

  • Some more info would be helpful-
    1) is this refusal to nap new or has been going on for a while (how long)
    2) what time is wake-up and what time are you putting him down for his nap?
    3) is he still on 2-nap schedule or 1-nap?
    4) has he been sick recently or hit any major milestone?
and assuming this is a recent development, when he was napping well for you, what time did he wake up and what time(s) were his naps and for how long?

Assuming this is new, my thoughts are either:
    1) he's been sick recently and perhaps he now has an ear infection
    2) He's going through a phase of separation anxiety (my son does that every now and then)
    3) He is on 2-nap schedule but ready to switch to 1 nap
    4) either teething or sick or major milestone...

  • I think PP suggestions are great. My LO started crying and screaming for his afternoon nap. No matter what I did! I tried cutting his morning nap short, got crying and screaming. Tried putting him for afternoon nap later or earlier and screaming. So at the end of the day our solution was to move to 1 nap...but not knowing what your little ones schedule it's like it's hard to really know what to say. How old is he? Could this be the 18 month sleep regression?

  • I think he's transitioning to one nap. I put him down after lunch today rather than after his snack and it went so much smoother. He was very emotional beforehand but it was worth it in the long run.
He still sleeps close to 12 hours a night so I think at this age one 1 to 2 hour nap should be okay, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. He normally goes down around 730 pm and up at 7 am, what used to be his 1st nap was at 1030 after his snack and that worked great and then he went down for another around 2. Thanks for the suggestions!
