One & Done: Only child

DS - Update

For those that provided such wonderful support and advice just an update on DS and his anxiety/possible OCD.  We are continuing to see the psychologist but we now have a referral to a child psychiatrist for a full assessment.  We are also wait listed for a program at the local children's hospital that is a group therapy program with other children with similar issues.  We also have some additional things to try at home and were reassured that the approach we are taking in our response is appropriate and helpful and what we should be doing.  She said it is really positive that he continues to talk with me and tell me what is going on in his head and telling me about issues happening at school. I also contacted his teacher via email (they never return calls) to update her and advise that we need to be made aware of issues so we know they are happening and we can come up with a game plan to address the issues.  At the suggestion of the psychologist I also made a request to speak with the guidance counselor at school so they can also offer support.  So a lot of work gone into trying to move forward and more work to come.  Anxiety and behaviors are pretty much the same for him so not much change there but I am not expecting that to change in the near future and not without additional therapy and resources.

Okay, time to count to ten...or maybe a 1000.  So just got an email from the teacher and she agrees and goes on to mention several incidents, one of which where he had a PANIC ATTACK in school because he thought he had popcorn stuck in his throat (fear of choking is a common fear for him and he often won't eat lunch because of this) and he thought he was dying.   This happened last week.......I am so angry that she did not tell me about this not to mention the other incidents she listed.  I am almost near tears but more so from frustration than being upset. Need to obviously cool off before I respond...sorry for venting but my mama bear is seriously coming out on this one.  And she was so casual in her response......just unbelievable.

  • Oh my. I'm glad things are going well with the psychologist. I would be livid about the stuff at school too. :( At least now you are communicating with the teacher? Maybe she doesn't get how serious it is. There is a lot of ignorance around mental health issues. I hope you can find a good path moving forward with the school.
  • Lurker...child therapist... chiming in again. I think he definitely would qualify for a 504 plan. You can request this in writing or ask the psychologist and/or psychiatrist to write a letter for you. The school needs to have a plan in place to help your DS cope with his anxiety while at school. Also, as a parent I would be pissed if my child had a panic attack and the teacher didn't notify me!

  • Ugh @meo34.  I'm so sorry that happened.  I cannot believe she did not tell you sooner!  I hope all of the supports you are putting in place come together soon for you and your son.  You're a great mom!

That is unacceptable. I would involve the principal at this point.
Agreed. If a child is having panic attacks at school, the parents need to be notified.
    This, exactly.

Oh hell no! I cannot believe that this was not brought to your attention until now! Completely unacceptable!
