Strawberries

Can anyone remember if this is on the no go list before one? I want to say it's fine because it's in baby food but I've avoided them so far. Until tonight when he got a hold of a slice.

Re: Strawberries

  • I don't think we're supposed to wait til 1 on it, but I have found that citrus irritates my babies and it is better if I delay it past the guideline (which I can't remember) I was planning on waiting til June when they are in season. I wouldn't think a slice would be terrible though.

  • Whoops...strawberries were one of LO's first foods and we've had no reaction at all yet (except her wanting one every single time she sees them).  The only foods that we are avoiding (BLW, 7 months) are honey and nuts.

  • I gave them to E at this point in the year when she was a teeny. A lot. But she was born in April so she was about 10 months. Not 8. I wish just a few weeks didn't make such a big difference.

  • DD had strawberries last night, and holy crap her poop smelled awful. Other than that though, no issue. But, obviously every baby reacts differently. Citrus can irritate as PP said.

  • LO had strawberries in a purée last week.

  • We have had strawberries in purees, yogurt, and frozen in the mesh feeder without issue. The only thing our pedi said to avoid was honey.

  • DH fed E peanut butter at like 5 months. Lol. I freaked when I found out. I still haven't given it to I even though I'm sure he's not allergic.

  • I made strawberry purée to mix in LOs oatmeal followng a baby food making book so I think it's like everything else, varies for each baby but not a no-no like honey.

  • It was the only thing M ever had a reaction to. She got a rash from strawberries until she was about 20mo. I kept trying every month or so. She's fine with them now.

I never really worried about allergen foods much. Give small amounts and check for rashes and hives. :)

  • We did strawberries weeks ago. It was fine.
I'm only avoiding honey and cows milk. Everything else is on the table to be introduced.

  • My LO has been ok with strawberries. I agree that it just differs from child to child. I'm waiting on the honey and that's about it.
  • Strawberries are a pretty common allergen, but of course recommendations keep changing about when things should be introduced. It's also different if they are cooked and usually won't cause a reaction that way, I believe. Here us what wholesomebabyfood.com says about them

Food allergies are also weird in that they seem like they can grow out of them or they can pop up at any time. I was never allergic to anything, then when I got pregnant with DD all of a sudden all stone fruits make my throat itchy and my mouth tingle, so I avoid them now.

  • Oliver had a reaction from strawberry in a purée (rash all over). We don't have food allergies so I'm not too worried. We're just avoiding the strawberries, honey, and pb...so far.
  • I don't think it is.  Gerber makes a strawberry, apple, and banana blend that's a stage two.  P has had it w/o any problems.

Right but those are cooked so I wasn't sure about fresh. He seems to be fine though.

  • I'm going to say strawberries are a no until May just because they're going to suck until then. The strawberries you can find now aren't worth eating

@somerandomchick it's strawberry festival season in Florida. They're probably ok. I mean, when I had them...they were pretty awesome.
  • We've tried strawberries. She was indifferent to them. Thank goodness no reaction.

  • I didn't wait.  Parker loves them.  I made him strawberry applesauce and blueberries strawberries and bananas... loved it.  No reactions.  Although we have no history of food alergies in our family.
