Bfing WWYD?

I threw my back out about 3 weeks ago.  Having been going to the chiroprator, heating stretching.  It is not getting better.  Went to my doc she prescribed muscle relaxer - said anything she prescribes won't be good for breast feeding but I should take it, and to call the ped to check.  So I called the ped and I will need to pump and dump for a week.  We are just nursing morning and night.  I can wean him I guess.  I can pump twice a day for a week and then try to start nursing again.  I can Pump once a day for a week and try to nurse again (I hate pumping).  I have been gone for 2 4-5 day stretches in the last 2 months for business and he has started nursing when I get home just fine.  Not take the meds ( but my back is super bad and I feel like I have tried many things).  Any other Ideas? WWYD?

Re: Bfing WWYD?

  • Can I just say that you're awesome for still BF'ing? And I give you even more kudos for looking for a solution to your pain that will work with BFing even though you have a solution that unfortunately won't.

    You are amazing mama :)

    That is all.

  • Oh on another note, my back and neck are messed up from a bad car accident about 7 years ago and I got a massager that really helps. It's one that sends electric pulses to your muscles. My doc used one on my in physical therapy and it was amazing but my insurance company wouldn't cover the PT anymore :( I got it off groupon for a great deal. I'll look it up for you!

  • Do you feel you are emotionally ready to wean?  IF so, I'd just wean now and take the meds. Can't imagine pumping at this point!  We are down to just morning session and I'm planning to stop this weekend.  I feel ready at this point emotionally, and DS also is showing signs he's ready to wean... the past few mornings he was showing much less interest in nursing.  GL with whatever decision you make!

That looks awesome. The chiropractor uses something similar. (And that you for your kind words).

  • This might be very bad, but I'm also only BF last thing at night and first thing in the morning, so when I've needed to take meds, I've taken them straight after a feed, so that there is the longest possible time after the meds, before BF.

Depending on how often you need to take the meds, this option might work for you?

Meds affect BF in two ways - either they enter the milk and can be harmful to baby, or they affect your supply. People are often cautious about meds and BF because of the supply, which wouldn't be an issue for you.

  • @lormor I asked the Ped about taking meds right after I nurse. She said no has to be 24 hours. I took meds I may pump tonite. Gave ds a sippy cup of milk when he woke this morning. He seems okay.
