Encapsulating your own placenta

Thought this might fit best on this board. Please let me know if this question does not belong here.

Anyone have experience with encapsulating their own placenta? None of the ladies that do it locally have contacted me back and it seems they are all booked up. If anyone has done this themselves, do you have any tips or tricks? Any equipment or supplies that are a must or that yields best results? TIA, mommies!!!

Re: Encapsulating your own placenta

  • No direct experience since I had mine done. However, my doula who did mine said it was pretty easy. The worst thing is cleaning it (I think you want to remove the membranes and get all the blood out). She added lemon and ginger to my pills which was great.
Here is a site you may find useful if you do it yourself. It has pictures along with the steps.

Thank you for the info. It does seem like a simple, albeit time consuming process.

  • Also have you tried to find someone in the surrounding area who could do it? I live in a rural area and my doula does it for the whole area. She has even overnighted pills that she made or drove over an hour one way to pick up and drop off them off.
  • I didn't do it with my placenta (mine's still sitting in my freezer), but I have encapsulated liver into pills for my anemia and I assume the process is the same.  I dehydrated the liver in my oven on the lowest possible setting.  Once dried I put it in the food processor until it was powder.  Then I filled my gelatin capsules.  That's it.

Filling the capsules is time consuming and messy.  I almost think it's easier to get it down into powder form and then add the powder to food you eat, like a smoothie or whatever.  You can't really taste it that way and it saves a lot of time.

I am looking in Dallas, which is about an hour or so from where I will be delivering. I have found some ladies who will charge a bit extra to drive the distance but so far one is booked solid for may, and the other 2 have yet to contact me back.

Had not thought about that. Definitely something to consider. There is a little machine you can get to help you fill the capsules from what I have seen.

  • I'm an encapsulator and did my own after the birth of my 2nd son.  It's totally doable if you choose to go that route.  A capsule filling machine makes it much faster but is not necessary if you don't want to spend the extra $15-20.

If you want I can ask if anyone in your area is available in some of the placenta encapsulator groups on FB that I belong to?

A friend of mine has a doula she used in the past who I am going to call. That would be helpful though in case she can't do it. I will be delivering near DFW Texas- or about 45 minutes north east of there.
