mono/di twins

I'm 26 weeks pregnant with mono/di twins. Throughout the pregnancy baby B has had growth discrepancy. Baby A is in the 40% percentile and Baby B is in the 2% of other twins in the same gestational stage. Everything else seems to be good with both babies, no signs of tts and fluid levels are good. Anyone else with a similar situation? When did you deliver?

Re: mono/di twins

  • I'm in my 31st week now with mono/di twins, so I haven't delivered yet.  Up until my 27th week growth scan, Baby B was measuring behind Baby A.  Not enough to be concerned with ttts, but enough to pay attention to the growth.  I don't remember the percentage difference, but the weight difference was more than 1/2lb.  However at my 29 week growth scan, Baby B had caught up and was only 1oz behind and then was exactly the same size at my 31 week scan.  They have no idea what caused the growth spurt, but it seems to be holding steady.  I'm not too much help with your questions, but wanted to share my current situation.

My MFM has told me all along that even though they are identical, there will always be a smaller one.

  • Thank you! It gives me hope! Same here, doctors do not have an answer has to why Baby B is smaller. I hope Baby B catches on to Baby A as well.. :)
  • I'm also pregnant with mono/di twins, and my Baby A is smaller.  She also has a two vessel cord (instead of 3), which can also be why she's smaller.  They said it's completely normal to have a smaller baby.  For me, they want the difference to be under 20% and ours are at 8% right now.  Baby B is a full ounce heavier than Baby A and measuring several days ahead.  But all is still good with Baby A.

I also had mono/di twins, and baby A was about 20% smaller than B. My MFM doc had me indiced at 35 weeks because baby A just seemed to not be growing on track anymore. They were very healthy at birth but needed 7 days in the special care nursery because they were not eating well.

Good luck to you! Hopefully your small baby will catch up but things will still work out if not :)

Make sure they do frequent dopplers to check cord flow as well. I had intermittent absent end diastolic flow to my baby B causing him to be growth restricted. I delivered just short of 34 weeks because flow was showing signs of reversing and B had stopped growing.

  • I delivered my mo/di boys last week at 36 wks 3 days. Babies both came home with me 3 days after delivery. A weighed 6lb 12oz and B weighed 5lb 11oz.
