Happy Mardi Gras June 14 Ladies!! Anybody doing anything fun today to celebrate? King cake? Non-alcoholic hurricanes (can they make those)? Gumbo? My family back in NY celebrates every year, they bust out a collection of awesome mardi gras hats and we usually do some fun drinks/gumbo at home. I might drag DH out to Heaven on Seven for dinner

Or maybe I'll be lazy and watch Treme re-runs on HBO whist noshing on store bought king cake. Enjoy the day!

I've eaten King Cake for the past 2 weeks but now I want more! Might as well be fat on Fat Tuesday

And then again tomorrow since its Ash Wednesday and I can't eat meat!

In Ontario, we refer to today as Pancake Tuesday.

My DS and all of his schoolmates are having pancakes prepped and served by school faculty and some parent volunteers. Not sure I'll be doing anything special myself, but pancakes sound really good right about now.

I don't even know what king cake is! No celebrating here for me, but it's never really been a holiday that I've gotten in to (sorry labor buddy!) Apparently it is also fasnacht day which is celebrated around here because we have such a large population of Pennsylvania Dutch. I'm all for a fasnacht (learned they are like fried doughnuts, yum!)

My DH is French so we do King cake for the Epiphany. And I have to say I much much prefer the French King Cake to the Gulf Coast Mardi Gras King Cake.

We usually do Beignets for Mardi Gras, so tonight DH is frying up some Beignets and topping them with powdered sugar...mmmmmm

I want King Cake so bad!! I don't think they sell it anywhere around here and I really don't feel like making it.

The French King cake is made with puff pastry and inside is a delicious goodness of frangipane (almond paste?). They also bake the porcelain "baby" inside.

oh shoot I forgot today was Mardis Gras!! Thanks for reminding me! Even though we don't celebrate it I do like to get some King Cake, so maybe I'll see if my grocery store has some after work! Yum.

@becomingmommyagain that looks amazing. It's very hard for me to turn down French desserts. Too bad there's no French bakeries by me

We have paczki day, they are a fried doughnut type pastry with a yummy filling, I just found out I passed my 3hr so I went out and got a cherry one, yumm!

IHOP is giving away free short stacks today

It's funny, it seems those cultures that dont do the Louisiana style King Cake do some kind of fried donut-y goodness.

@ElTrain5 - the French King Cake is SUPER easy to make. Seriously, two sheets of puff pastry with the almond paste slathered in the middle. My family loves it so much DH usually makes two - one for the traditional ceremony with the kids and the hidden baby, and then one to just nom nom nom nom on!!!

I just sent a text to my husband about how we need to get fasnacht's tonight. He's never heard of them so this my take some convincing. If that fails mage I'll skip my dinner plans to make pancakes!

Well... I wasn't planning to do Mardi Gras since I won't be fasting for Lent... But cake! @becomingmommyagain we have the French kind for Epiphany too. I love it! I've had the other kind once at someone's house as a kid. My glucose test is on the 10th. Too close for cake?

@eltrain5 - Random fun fact, but my sister was an extra on Treme She was in a few different episodes of the first season! Kind of fun.

She lived in NOLA for a while and loves all things Mardi Gras. She baked a king cake this past weekend. She also offered to make me alcohol-free hurricanes, but I think it's really just juice at that point?
