38 + weeks and Loss of appetite

I am just over 38 weeks and for the past 3 days or so, I have completely lost my appetite..I am ok with breakfast but I sometime has to force myself to eat, lunch I force myself to eat a sandwhich and then comes dinner..I think I want to eat but every bit of food I look at I just get turned off by it. the past couple night I have been skipping dinner cause I just can't bring myself to eat...for those who have reached this point or this is not their first, have you experienced this? Should I be concerned about this and call my OB?

PS..Please don't tell me i need to eat..baby needs it..try small meals..I have heard all this and know this...just curious to see if others been through it.

  • I went through this with DD.  I had to force myself to eat towards the end.  The day after I delivered her I was so hungry!  I ate 2 lunches. :). I wouldn't worry too much.  You do need to eat and take in nutrition but I am sure when you deliver your appetite will return.  This can also be a sign that you are close to delivery.

  • It's pretty normal to lose your appetite at the end. I would just try to get enough calories within a 24 hour period. Try to eat SOMETHING at night, even if it's just a few bites, but if you're not eating full meals I don't think it's that big of a deal.

  • I ddin't experience it at all with DS (my appetite was raging right until the end), but I'm experiencing it right now, and it's got me kind of freaked out because it's extremely unusual for me to not want to eat, pregnant or not.  I have heard that a lot of people will lose their appetite as they get close to going into labor, so you could be getting close.  It has me a little worried though because I'm only 30w...

  • I think it means .... you're 38+ weeks pregnant.  You're running out of room for food.  I hit this point around 38w with both babies as well and never went into labor.

Do what you can, but it's not like your baby is going to starve if you skip dinner.

  • This is me too.  I can do breakfast, then I have mainly been eating fruit during the day or just a smoothy.  I just am not hungry.

  • I wouldn't worry of force yourself to eat. Most likely it means your body is gearing up for labor. My appetite dissappeared and I was slightly queasy starting the week before my water broke.
  • BTW...when I lost my appetite last pregnancy a friend recommended smoothies with peanut butter in them.  I could take sips of smoothie throughout the morning and get calories from the PB too.  It was yummy and did the trick

  • Definitetly! I actually lost 3 lbs at my last weekly appt and since then have lost another 3...I'm only eating once daily and super thirsty, and i snack on fruit. Doctor isn't worried and says it's completely normal...just make sure you are taking in fluids :) Hang on! Were almost there!

  • Same with me. Finding it hard to want to eat, but feel like i can't quench my thirst. When I'm hungry...the thought of anything sounds unappetizing. It sucks.

  • I'm 38 weeks and 2 days and I've found that for the last few days, I feel crummy if I don't eat, but crummy when I do. I've felt hungry without having an appetite, if that makes sense, and have to force myself to eat. I'd say it's because the baby is pressing on my stomach, but this feeling started after she dropped to station 0, as far down as she can go, which my midwife confirmed last week. Could it be a hormone thing?
  • I have felt the same way for the past 2 weeks. I feel hungry then when the food's in front of me I can only manage a few bites. I guess there's just no room in there. It will all be over with tomorrow as I have been scheduled for inducing on my due date!  Good luck, it won't be much longer. ;)
