Pregnancy confirmation visit?

Hi guys, first pregnancy and confused!

My OB/GYN schedules separate visits -- a confirmation visit and then the first prenatal -- when you make that first "I'm pregnant" call to them. I am scheduled for the confirmation this week and the prenatal next week. After going through a whole box of tests (all positive) I am starting to believe :) Going by LMP I'm at 8 weeks this week.
My question is, how necessary is this confirmation visit? They tell me it is optional, and that they to a urine test and maybe an ultrasound. The prenatal will not have an ultrasound, but will have the bloodwork, PAP, history etc.

While I am definitely anxious to get this all officially started and make it seem more real, if it is just extra cost then I am hesitant.

Anyone have any advice? Thanks! :)

Re: Pregnancy confirmation visit?

  • I'm not sure. I just called the doctor (I'm 5 weeks) and she scheduled me for a confirmation next week and then said that I'd have another appointment about a month later that would be more extensive.

How far apart are your two appointments? If they are very close, I'd ask if you could do them all at once.

  • Not even a week apart, weird! Thanks!
  • I did a confirmed visit at 5 weeks. Met with the nurse and went over programs, things you need to stay away from ect. Then 5 weeks later I went back for my first actual prenatal visit. It's pretty routine for a lot of places

    It's a BOY

  • It sounds similar to what I am doing but my OB's office didn't call it a confirmation visit. I go in between 8-9 weeks for an ultrasound and appointment with the nurse. I will have my first appointment with the doctor about 4 weeks later.

Having appointments 1 week apart does seem a bit annoying.

  • I am sure every doc is different.

I had a confirmation/ in office pee test at right before the 5 week mark. When that was positive, I was scheduled for what my doc calls a "viability scan"-- which is basically a very early US.

I had mine at 5w 6d (so basically a week after my confimation), but the cost was nominal-- it was just a co-pay so 30.00 for each appointment?

  • I was suppose to have the same thing done and requested that we combine both appts and she sounded shocked that I would ask that. It doesn't make sense to come in twice within a week. I'd for sure call back and request that they both be done on the same day.

  • I called my primary provider when I had my BFP, and he sent me for a blood test. He referred me to an OB practice where I met with a nurse at 8 weeks and had my first OB check up at 12 weeks. My only cost was a $10 copay the first time I went to the OB.

I never had a separate confirmation appointment, if you're getting positive home tests and you are reasonably sure of your LMP date it shouldn't be an issue for them to skip that appointment for you.

My first appointment was at 10 weeks, I got all the standard blood work done, gave a urine sample, a pap, and my midwife did a doppler check and covered the basic dos and don'ts.

Breaking that up into two appointments within a week just doesn't make sense to me... I'd either forgo the confirmation entirely if possible, or combine them into one appt.

  • I never had a "confirmation visit." They wouldn't see me until I was around 8 weeks (based off of my own calculations, luckily I was correct) and they did the full visit. Pap-smear, ultra sound, the million questions, blood work, the whole nine. I'm not sure what they would do differently or leave out at a "confirmation visit," especially if the pregnancy is confirmed by the doctor.

  • Thanks ladies! Visit was today. Had an ultrasound to confirm and verify the age, which was exactly as I thought. Probably unnecessary in the end. But I've been so nervous so it was nice to see the little creature in there! There was a disclaimer given that some insurance policies only pay for 2 ultrasounds but there is no way to know that until its all over, they say. So there's the risk in having a 1st tri u/s. Back next week for the 1st prenatal.
  • All of mine are separate appts: confirmation, U/S, and PreNatal with the Doc The confirmation appt they went over the do's and don't (waste of my time), family history, urinalysis to verify pregnancy and check for UTI, and full blood panel. The U/S is it's own appt with the hospital's imaging dept The OB appt will be for me to meet my Doc and get a pap if he's deems it necessary My OB office schedule appts based on specific dates along the pregnancy timeline, not convenience factor Very annoying...

  • No confirmation appointment for me.   I called them and they had me make an appt. for between 6-8 weeks.    Mine is @ 7 weeks.    They said there would be bloodwork and talking about what I can and cannot do.     No mention of a sonogram or pap.
