Nurseries and Baby Gear

Calling all baby-wearers/carrier lovers.

I'm just curious as to what carriers/slings you prefer. I've been reading up on a lot of different brands and styles and I don't know how to choose. I plan to EBF again this time around and was wondering the best carrier for nursing while up about and also in public. Thanks for your opinions.

  • When DD was tiny, I used the Moby but it had a shelf life for me..once she hit 13-14 lbs I could just never get it tight enough.

I used a ring sling and the ergo...but I never attempted nursing in either..although I could see if being easier in the ring sling vs the ergo!

  • I've been researching the different carriers, and I think I've decided on an Ergo, but I have a couple of questions.
I am a super sweaty girl, and I'm wondering if the regular model is just going to have me drenched in sweat the whole time I'm wearing it? I
See that they have some higher end models that have more moisture-wicking fabric, but I like the looks of the original and all the reviews I've seen were for the original.

Also, it seems like a lot of people switch to the Ergo after the newborn stage. Have any of you used it with the newborn insert from birth on?

I also want to BF, and I get that this isn't possible with an Ergo, but is it that big of a hassle to take the baby out and take it off to BF?
  • I used the Moby with three of my kids from the start till about two months to three depending on weight. I love the Moby for the newborn stage however it starts to stretch out to much after that. This time around i switched to my Becco Soleil and i absolutely love it! I tried a friends ergo for awhile and honestly hated it. I have tiny shoulders so the straps always felt like they were going to fall off . The Becco allows the straps to be crossed which give more support and feels safer. I use my carrier almost every day ! With my daughter i had to use the infant insert which is super easy to use. The carrier also has some pretty nifty features like the cell phone pocket and toy ring.
  • I was considering getting a Moby but now I'm reconsidering. I want to only have to buy one really good one. I was looking at the ring slings but was worried about the support. I have chronic lower back pain so I need something that can support my back as well as my little bean.

  • the ergo does get a little hot. If you're super sweaty I think you might want to look into the sport one..i think that was the ligther material. DD was born in Nov..so I just went with the regular. I did have the infant insert. I just wasn't a huge fan of it. It was a little weird and awkward to get her in it and then get her and the insert into the ergo. My husband maybe used it 4-5 times for walks with her. It's mostly why i went out and bought the moby..just because I didn't care for the infant insert.

I didn't attempt nursing in the ergo..but you could probably do it in it. I think a ring sling or moby might offer a little more cover vs. the ergo if you're looking for that!

Wearing the Ergo is like being in a furnace; get one with lighter material. I wish I had gone that route.

I used the infant insert and thought it was fine. The easiest way for me was to put the Ergo on the bed, position the insert on it, then lie DS in both and lean over him to fasten everything.

As for BF in the Ergo, I don't know how feasible that really is, and it would be a headache to get him in and out to eat. I just make sure he has a full tummy and has burped well before putting him in the carrier.
  • I always suggesting having a wrap for the very beginning and then an Ergo for the long haul. I really love my ring sling, but if you are concerned about your back, I'd recommend an Ergo, for sure.

I found breastfeeding in a wrap or carrier very cumbersome, but once my DD was a bit bigger (4 months?), we were able to do so in the Ergo. In fact, if we're in public and she wants to nurse, I'd much rather put her in the carrier and nurse in there, because it's less cumbersome than my nursing cover. It took me a while to get really comfortable with doing it, but it's easy as pie now.

  • I'm planning on getting the Ergo. I asked a couple experienced moms and they all gave it glowing reviews. One mom has used it for all three of her boys.
  • I have an original Ergo, and I find it no hotter than just carrying DD around in my arms. Maybe I'm just weird. But I live in Texas, and I've carried her around the park in July in it without issue. Only the straps and waistband are thick, and that doesn't cover that much of you.

And I will mention my child is like George from Seinfeld: a human heat pump! Wouldn't matter what I put her in, she's going to give off heat. And she's never been particularly sweaty in the Ergo.
  • I'd HIGHLY encourage you to look for a baby wearing group in your area.. (if you tell me where you are I can connect you) - that way you could try a lot of different carriers and decide for yourself..

I had an ergo and thought it was gold - then literally one day I put it on and it hurt.  I then found out this isn't too uncommon as its a short body carrier - I'm lusting after a tula carrier - but LOVE my ring sling.

I just purchased a wrap to use for a while and hope to have a new squish and will use a ring sling while they are little.  I use the ring sling a ton with my toddler when she wants to be up for 5-15 minutes and then down to run and then up.. etc.  (like the end of a grocery shopping trip) - its fast and lovely.  I nursed in a pocket sling when she was little and loved it - my anotomy is such that nursing int he ergo wasn't something I was able to do..

  • My preference for when DD was an infant was my Ergo.  I have the performance model.  I breast fed in it easily from about the time that she was ~3 months (maybe earlier but I honestly cannot remember).  I would walk around in public with a cover over her and breast feed.  I'd hike and breast feed. I carried DD around the airport and it seems that most traveling baby-wearing moms have Ergo too (just my observation). Now that DD is a toddler I wear her on my back for my added comfort. I love my ergo!

I also had the moby and wore it exactly three times.  I just don't have the patience for al that fabric though I do believe it is a great option for many moms.  I like the dressier look to it, too.

We also had a framed back pack for longer hikes.  You would only want to consider this if you were really outdoorsy and wanted to bring LO on your excursions.  Ergo works well too but the framed carrier is more comfortable for longer trips and can hold more items, too.

Love our Ergo. That's the only one we have.
  • I have a K'Tan, and I absolutely love it. Very comfortable and lightweight.
  • The Ergo is OK.  It was a pain to put on and seemed so bulky. I bought the infant insert and returned it.  I finally tried the Beco Gemini and sold my Ergo.  The Gemini is a much lighter carrier and you can criss cross the straps in the back, eliminating that awful back clip on the Ergo.  I like that I can front, out and back carry with the Gemini and doesn't require a pricy infant insert.
Seriously, before you go buy an Ergo, check out other carriers, like the Beco Gemini.
