Fetal Non-Stress Test

Who else is having these done?

Today was my first test of three. They asked me to schedule some after they detected an abnormal heartbeat last week at an u/s. I wasnt sure I fully understood the test results, but the point of the test is to measure fetal activity and heartrate response?

I thought my little spikey chart looked pretty good until they told me that there wasnt enough activity. I now need to record kick-counts for my next NST scheduled next week. They told me 6-10 counts in a 2 hour period is acceptable. Do I actually count kicks? Or do I count movements and hiccups?

Re: Fetal Non-Stress Test

  • My stress test is in a few weeks. My high risk doctor mentioned kick counts, and she said any movement is considered a count. I guess I'd call just to make sure, but kicks, switching sides, are all good signs.

  • Yes, rolls, kicks, flips, bumps etc.. should be counted. Hiccups should not be counted as movement.

  • I had NSTs with my last pregnancy, this time I have BPPs. To agree with PP, hiccups do not count.

  • Starting at 34 weeks I have to have a NST once a week until delivery because I was overweight to start with before I got pregnant. Thankfully I have only gained 7lbs so far. Not happy about missing all this work soon but gotta do what I gotta do to make sure baby is healthy :)

  • The point of the NST is to measure the change in heart rate relative to movement.  Baby moves, heart rate goes up, baby stays still heart rate goes back down.

How can you tell the difference between a kick/roll/hiccup whatever?  I just feel movement.

Had my first NST yesterday, and they used a little noisemaker thingy to get her to move because she was too nonstressed!

hiccups are a repetitive bump. like you would notice in the same spot every second or so.

This. And hiccups to me feel like a muscle spasm

I havent really felt the baby hiccup yet. I was able to tell today because of the audible noise associated with the baby's movement. They also didnt give me a noisemaker. I just kept trying to get the baby to move because he/she just wanted to sleep.

Ok so I have to have these starting at 32 weeks every week due to lupus and PIHT- does anyone know what the deal is if you have an anterior placenta because yeah i definitely have never consistently been able to feel that much. She has to be right up against my placenta and hitting it to feel her and really that only happens a few times a day and not for longer than 5 minutes.

  • Interesting, I'll have to pay more attention to the bumps and blips and movements :)

  • I've had several of these now, due unfortunately to preterm contractions.  As far as kick count goes, my doc said any movement, although I wouldn't count hiccups either.  If you aren't feeling the 6-10 'kicks' in the allotted time period, you are supposed to eat something sugary/carby and then count again.  Sometimes little one is just sleepy and you need to give them a little zip of energy to wake them up. :)

  • I have to do this too because I'm a type one diabetic. I'm starting at 32 weeks and will have it done every two weeks. My doctor told me that I should feel 10 movements within an hour. However, she told me not to count hiccups or small flutters. I think each doctor has a different set of requirements. I would ask your doctor to clarify. Baby hiccups to me have always felt like a little heartbeat. The movement is in one spot, is continuous for a short period like a pulsing sensation. My little girl gets them every time i drink a ton of water at one sitting.

They're really making you do them for being overweight? I was way overweight with my son and never had an nst. Way overweight with this pregnancy, too, and the only reason I've had one this time was for decreased movement.

I've never heard of nst's for being overweight.
