Would You Do This?

I need a little insight/help making this decision.

I received an email this morning asking me to assume a VP role of fundraising next year for DS1's elementary school. I am honored and would love to get "in" with the PTO and the men and women on the board. Also, DS1 will have 4 more years at that school and eventually DS2 will go there.

The job description is a monthly morning meeting, working with local restaurants for the school fundraiser nights (eat here, the school gets a portion of $ earned that night) and to maintain a bulletin board at the school. Sounds easy enough.

I begin law school this fall. I am going part-time next year, so my hours at school are 5-9, every day. DS2 will be in 9-3 preschool 3 days a week, and we have babysitters arranged for the evenings until my DH gets home every day of the week. I plan to use weekends and preschool days as my study time.

Anyway, would you agree to the PTO position as well? This is a small community and I think being on as many boards/committees as possible would be a good decision both personally and future professionally.
Thoughts?!?

Re: Would You Do This?

  • If you can make it work, yes. I think being involved in PTO is a very valuable tool for parents.

  • I probably would. Although it sounds like a lot to take on, I feel like that involvement in PTO is invaluable for you and your kids.

Also, congrats on law school! That's awesome!
  • I probably would.....but I also have a tendency to take on too many things. I think if it's something you really want to do, go for it, and you will make it work. If you just feel more overwhelmed and that feeling overrides the excitement to do the job, don't do it.

  • Go for it!
  • Odd woman out here but no, I definitely wouldn't. Law school is so exhausting and intense and you don't need any distractions, trust me. I speak from personal experience having graduated from law school several years ago--you will need every second of your free time to study or rest or read and often law school involves study classes on weekends and after hours and, also, mine required an unpaid internship which was more down time that was consumed. It's a whirlwind and at exam time, it is like a marathon!! Congrats on law school!! Best of luck to you :)
I agree. When I was in law school, I had no other commitments and it was still tough to keep up, especially during exam time. Congrats! Good luck.
