Walkers or no walkers?

Hi,
I am not sure if I should get my DD a walker or not? I have heard many opinions about it & then some who said it is a must.

My DD is 8 1/2 months & crawls backwards & in circles. She kicks her legs around a lot so everyone is telling me to get a walker?

Just curious everyone's opinion about it....

i'm not sure that walkers are made anymore i haven't seen a walker in the stores in about 5 years or so but i bought my baby a saucer/bouncy seat at about 6 months old and it entertains him for hours and it helps with them learning to stand. check your local target or babies r us for a good deal on one. you should get one it's almost a must i think!

We ended up with a walker (MIL bought it at Target). We just watch DS like a hawk when he is in it (and it doesn't move very far or very fast). I don't think they are a must have at all.

We got one as a baby shower gift, it was only $50 at Target. We haven't set it up yet but I heard there are new regulations that make the base wider than doorways to make them safer. DS will have his exercauser at my parents and his walker at home. I think they are fun and helpful in encouraging baby to get around.

Walkers are not recommended. They also do not help babies learn to walk. I would go with an exersaucer or jumperoo type toy instead.

Thank you all! I called my pedi to ask her opinion & she also did not recommend walkers. She suggested the exersaucer but I feel my daughter is already to big for it to last a month or so. She already has a jumperoo & out growing that as well. Any any other entertainers you recommend that will last till she is 1 or so?

And our LO LOVES it. He is able to walk around the table and get to all the different toys. And it is stationary so you don't have to worry about falling down stairs etc.

Edit: I personally don't see an issue with a walker. As long as you NEVER leave your child unattended and gate off the stairs then I don't see an issue with the actual stairs etc.

Edit: Just read your response and we got this as a hand me down from my sister. Her LO loved this thing until she could really walk on her own and then still liked to play with the table. It's easy to break down and I remember her bringing it up for visits and putting it on the patio and her LO was 1 in July...she used it all summer.

I have an excersaucer that turns into an activity station that they can walk around and play with once they out grow the actual excersaucer seat. That's always an option if you don't decide to get the walker. Like PP said, here in canada they're actually illegal so it's definitely not a must have.

I have a walker for my little one, he absolutely loves it. We live in a small apartment so stairs aren't a worry, and fortunately I can keep a good eye on him given the space. He likes to get around on his own, plus he has a tray for toys. It gives him mobility but that means he grabs onto more things that I have to put away.

i have a walker for my 7 month old and she loves it! she is not a huge fan of her exersaucer so it really was not an option for us. she has always been a baby that does not like to sit still so the walker is perfect for her to motor around the house in. i am obviously not expecting it to help teach her how to walk, it is more for entertainment
