NBR: Family Summer Vacation Destinations?

I realize this has almost nothing to do with babies, but since you all live many different places I thought I'd seek out some advice.

Every year my husbands family skips Christmas presents and goes on a family vacation. We live in Boston, so 2 years ago we flew to Sedona, Arizona in February. We hiked, enjoyed some wineries and restaurants and hung out. Last summer we drove up to York Beach, Maine and rented a house on the water where we mostly just enjoyed the sun and some restaurants.

We are looking for a place to go this summer and we are open to a lot of possibilities. There are 9 of us, his parents in their 50s, 3 brothers (33, 31, 30) and their wives/girlfriends and then LO who will be 5 months or so when we go. We would definitely be willing to get on a plane but preferably a direct flight (and if we don't have to get on a plane, that's great too). Ideally the weather would be nice, not too hot. We love visiting wineries and breweries, going for hikes, swimming in lakes ocean, eating at good restaurants.

I realize this is pretty open ended, but does anyone have a favorite vacation spot that would fit this? I should also add we'd need to rent a house for all 9 people, and it would be ideal if the house could be $3000 or less for the week, especially if we have to fly.

Anyway, just looking for some possible ideas. Thanks for playing along!

The Outer Banks, NC was nice when we went. We went in the fall and the weather was pleasant, lots to do there, and loads of places to rent.

Also, Gatlinburg/the Smokies are a great place.

I don't have any recommendations on locations, but check out www.vrbo.com for vacation rentals.  We used it to find a rental house in St. Petersburg.  Most of the properties are privately owned and you can find really good deals.

  • I book everything on vrbo or homeaway, and you'll get tons of options.

Charleston is a great place too, but I doubt you'll find a big enough house to rent for 3K or below.  You could go north to Myrtle Beach area, but not actual Myrtle (too commercialized and crowded).  Murrel's Inlet is pretty nice and the rentals are less expensive.  It's about 15 miles south of Myrtle.

I will second PP that Outer Banks is pretty nice too.  If being on the ocean is not terribly important, look into Asheville, NC.  Mountains, hiking, ziplining, lakes, rivers, state parks and history (Biltmore House with vineyard tours!!!!).  Rentals are better priced in that area than ocean.  We are heading there in April and can't wait.
  • My dad has a vacation house in Pawley's Island, SC. It's beautiful...we are going for 4th of July.
  • I agree with Gatlinburg/Chatanooga. Its a great area and always things to do for people of all ages, you can also rent a big cabin in the mountains for a big group!!

  • Logistics for travel are more difficult, but Traverse City, MI is a great place to vacation. Right on lake Michigan, wineries, dining, and a huge emphasis on cherries of that's your thing.

  • I recommend savannah, Georgia. It's beautiful and historic, and a short drive will take you to tybee island beach. No idea about flights there- but it's about a 4-5 hour drive from Atlanta.

I was going to recommend the Gatlinburg, TN area! We went there for our honeymoon, and had a great time. We plan on going back with LO in the future-the aquarium was pretty neat

  • We're vacationing in the 1000 Islands in NY/Canada this summer. Great scenery, water, activities. I think there are wineries, but I was pregnant last time we went. There are tons of house rentals available.

I'd second Traverse City, MI. It's so beautiful, but the travel logistics would be tricky.

  • Asheville,NC- splurge and stay at Grovepark Inn. Plan to spend at least 1 full day at the spa. It's incredible- one of the best in the WORLD. And also home to my #1 pregnancy craving... The famous cheese plate.

  • Sonoma or Napa, Ca. Plenty of winery and brewery options. I love all the smaller but fantastic restaurants. There is hiking too. Not sure on the pricing of housing, since DH and I always stay at a friends place. I love the setting. It's just so peaceful and beautiful.

Colorado has lots of options too. Just depends what type of hiking and other activies you want to do. We have rented a house on a lake, and did so many different outdoorsy activies (hiking, boating, fishing, swimming in the lake, SxSing).

I was going to say Asheville as well.  It's a cute little town with great restaurants, lots of outdoorsy things to do and just really fun.

You could rent a cabin in the mountains there that would be nice for everyone.
  • Thanks everyone! SO many awesome suggestions. Now I want to go EVERYWHERE!

  • Colorado is awesome! So beautiful and filled with breweries. It can be very family friendly too. I also second some other options mentioned such as Savannah and Asheville.
