Jury duty at 29w5d .... Really?

Just venting that I was called for jury duty and am Sooo uncomfortable just sitting in this room... Can't they see my huge belly and discharge me?? Wtf!!

Re: Jury duty at 29w5d .... Really?

  • I guess you don't try to get out of it? I was summoned at like 14 weeks and was excused because I was pregnant so I never had to go. That's a shame. I would be in trouble because I would have to use the bathroom so much. They will probably let you go.

  • I'm a prosecutor and my best advice is to ask to speak to the jury commissioner immediately & explain your situation! I don't know what state you live in but in my state you get a form in the mail and can call and explain (try to get out of it) before going to court. Is it state or federal jury duty? Hopefully you can get out of it this time but you may be called again within the next three yrs! Good luck to you!
  • If you get called into a courtroom, I'd just answer questions/bring up points that would make it clear you wouldn't be a great juror (bathroom breaks, etc).  If you get dismissed, at least you've done your part and won't be called back for however long it is in your state (my state is 3 years).

  • Lol... I did respond saying that I was pregnant and asked to be postponed and my request was denied .. I live in jersey... I'm over this!!! I'm def making my case about not being a good juror because I'm hormonal and just start crying and then have to pee this really sucks !!
  • I have jury duty next week at 31 weeks. No biggie. I'm hoping to get dismissed early and have an afternoon to myself :-)

  • I wouldn't mind having jury duty lol big belly or not but my job requires standing my full shift so being able to sit with this belly is a luxury
  • Could be worse! Be glad you're not trying any cases at 31 weeks:)

I work in a court. I can sit in a courtroom 6+ hours a day. Don't see you getting out of it just 'cause you're KU. Sorry.

Honestly, if I had jury duty, I'd rather get it done with now then have to worry about it later when you have a newborn.
I always wondered about this. Would they still let you leave for the bi-weekly/weekly appointments? I've never had jury duty so I don't know how the scheduling works.

  • @RachelCA29 my brother was a juror on a murder trial and had a family vacation already scheduled during the trial. They planned the trial around him being gone for 3 days. If they think you're a good fit they'll work with you. Or you'll get dismissed because of it.

Interesting .... i wonder if that's true across the board and/or case dependent.

  • I had to sit through the whole damn Zimmerman trial here in FL. I wasn't picked in the end, but it was a HUGE pain in the butt! I'm one of those people that think it's annoying and I don't feel "privileged" serving my civic duty.

We were told to go back to the assembly room to be called by another judge I told them to reschedule me for sometime next year cause I can't do this... Call me what you want... I also found out I failed my 3 hour glucose test and feet and hands are swollen I'm just not in the mood for jury duty ... F this!

    This.

And OP, I would go and I'd just keep getting up to go to the bathroom. Or wear some pants with no liner so when I sneeze everyone could see that I peed myself. I can't imagine that they wouldn't excuse you for being the obnoxious pregnant lady. Play it up!

    This.

I got a summons when my DS was just months old. Was able to defer since I was bf'ing and we had no alternate child care...but lemme tell you I would way rather do it at 30w pg than when juggling an infant.

  • I have to go when I am 36 weeks, but I didn't want to postpone and get called in later when I have the baby.

I live in NJ and I was called for jury duty at 32 weeks... I asked to postpone but no one will call me back to tell me if it was approved... Now I'm guessing the answer is no. I have a growth scan that week so I am going to ask my OB for a doctor's note.

  • Just found out I got my jury duty postponed to the week of August 25th, which works out well because by then I'll be back at work and baby will be in daycare. Guess I got lucky with the right person making the decision!

  • I was summoned last time at 39w6d, they let me postpone, thankfully because my water broke the night before that. I'd be annoyed if I was summoned now too probably, but fwiw I'm uncomfortable just about anywhere. I agree w/ the pp better to serve & be done vs postpone & be called back while you have an infant IMO.

  • Unless you're having complications with your pregnancy, I agree with PP's about biting the bullet and just getting it done now. I'd hate to be stuck with jury duty with a newborn.
