Re: Avery...boy or girl?

  • I know both a boy Avery and a girl Avery. I think it is suitable for both
  • Loading the player...
  • My husband's middle name is Avery and so is his father's (but he goes by Avery). I think of it as a male name that's being used frequently for girls.
  • Both! I like this name

Ava and Avery? No, way too close.
  • I think of it as a boy name that's being overtaken by girls. I can't see your siggy but I'm gathering your daughter is Ava? Way too similar!!

  • I think girl. I don't know anyone with the name IRL, but there was a girl character named Avery on a tv show.

  • I read Charlottes Web when I was 5, and the pig's girl - Fern, has a brother named Avery.
I loved it.  At 5, I had chosen my child's name.  When I became pregnant, it was the only name on my list - boy OR girl.  So I have a girl Avery now :)
(and no names for this new child!)

  • This is going to sound sexist (i am actually a feminist at times), but I think if you have to ask, then default to girl name. You don't want a son to have folks assume female in future job applications, but for a girl, the unisex name can give an advantage. I worked in HR and saw this happen.

Avery is a boy's name. Just because people use it on girls does not make a it a girl or neutral name.
  • For an adult, I think male. For a baby, I think female. It's one of those names that's being given more to girls these days. I wouldn't use it with Ava.
  • It is used mostly on girls around here but I still find it masculine. I do know one little boy named Avery-a FB friend's son. He's about 4-ish and he's adorable.

I think it really depends on the industry/profession.  Some employers explicitly give hiring preference to women, and I've certainly seen this in action.

I love Avery for a boy, and it's still increasing in popularity for boys so I don't think it's gone to the girls by any means, but I do think it's too close to Ava.

  • I would use it for a girl but I really like gender neutral names or boys names for girls. The one Avery I do know is a girl but I honestly think it's like Taylor- works for both!

You're right. You do sound sexist.

  • I think girl since I only know girls with this name. I like Ava and Avery for siblings, but would assume you had two girls.

It's a Death Eater surname too.

I also think its too close to Ava by a mile. If you had a third child, would you continue the Av--- trend? It would certainly limit name options.

  • I considered Avery for our DD but, DH vetoed it because he said it was a boy's name. I definitely like it for a boy or a girl.
