Medela Calma and bottle feeding...

My 8 week old has refused multiple attempts to take the bottle. We have tried different bottles/nipples, warming the nipple, varying the temperature of the breast milk and DH has tried feeding her in different positions.
I have heard good things about the Medela Calma nipple system and wondered if anyone has had any success with this brand. It's pricey for one nipple so I'm looking for success stories before purchasing.
She has not been introduced to a pacifier and I'm wondering if I introduce one if it will help her get used to the idea of a bottle...?
Anyone have advice for this momma who is about ready to give up with the Bottle? :(

Re: Medela Calma and bottle feeding...

  • I thought the calma nipple would be great but I did not have success with it. I felt like it came out very fast for a skis flow nipple. We used the slow flow Medela for awhile but she just took it down to quick. We are now onto the tommy tippie anti colic bottles. She seems to go a little slower with this bottle but it's still work in progress bc she's pretty messy with it. My friend has had good luck with dr brown. Hope this is helpful!

Unfortunately you might have to keep trying until you find something that works.

  • My 11 week old is doing well with the Medela Calma.  It was recommended by LC (I know somebody above said it wasn't recommended by LC - as with everything you will always get conflicting opinions).  We started with Avent Natural & LO wanted nothing to do with it.  He has been doing pretty well with the Medela Calma although we didn't try anything else after so it could also be that he is learning to take a bottle.  We have been using it since week 6.
  • We tried many bottles that resulted in choking and gagging. I had the best results with the regular Dr. Browns bottles. It was the slowest flow that I could find which helped. I was concerned switching from the regular nipples to breast but have had no problems. DD is 3 1/2 months and has 50/50 bottles/breast d/t trouble gaining from what we think is an insufficient milk transfer issue at breast. (I EBF my first 3 with no problem....she's a mystery)
