Parenting after a Loss

Pinterest ruined me as a parent because...

... even when I promise myself I'm not going to have expectations about how DD is going to interact with an activity, I still want to cry when she tears the lovingly trimmed and taped paper towel rolls off the wall and dumps the bowl of pom poms out for the cat.

Or, how this was supposed to go even though there is no "supposed" when it comes to toddlers: https://howwemontessori.typepad.com/how-we-montessori/2012/06/pom-poms-and-cardboard-tubes.html

I NEED TO HEAR YOUR CONFESSIONS, MAMAS. Tell me I'm not alone.

Re: Pinterest ruined me as a parent because...

  • The only Pinterest things I do with my kids are things that I can put my finishing touches on. I did the Santa handprint ornament and a canvas of my kids' footprints to make snowmen out of them on a simple background of blue sky and snow covered ground. I used an idea of Instagram photo magnets but did it my way (it came out OK, I used the wrong materials so the magnets fell off the back after the glue dried so I had to use double stick tape). My biggest problem is the time to do a lot of the projects I need to do like renovations or saving DS's schoolwork in a big tote bin that will have each grade level set up. I have made several cupcake recipes from Pinterest. Some have been fails (hope that makes you feel better LOL!!)

  • I can totally see my DD doing the same thing.  That paper towel roll would not stay taped up for long.

  • When they were smaller I did that sensory bag thing with the hair gel inside. They just tried to eat it. I was so bummed and still care nothing about it.
I did this, too. Elinor's response was EXACTLY THE SAME.

And here I am trying to keep my kid alive and making sure there is something clean to wear and anything on the table for dinner. This whole being a mom thing is way harder than I ever thought it would be!

    WORD,

If you'd like to all feel awesome about yourselves, I can tell you the number of crafty projects I have attempted with my DS.  ZERO.  His attention span is nil, he is not so hip on following directions, and until the weather is better and we can take it outside I am unwilling to risk the ruined carpets and floors and frustration that I know will come if we even try some of this stuff.

We play with Play doh (hasn't eaten it yet, thank goodness) and "color" (a/k/a occasionally scribble and then tear the paper off the crayons) but that's about it.  I stopped looking at Pinterest long ago as I realized there was no way I could do any of those things, much less on the weekends when I'm at work all week.  He gets some sensory exposure by helping in the kitchen (we made muffins on Sunday, and he helps pour, mix and scoop) but that's where it ends.

To her credit, the new nanny has had DS doing more creative stuff, like using a glue stick to stick shapes she cut out on to construction paper.  That's about as crafty as we have gotten.

we did pudding in a baggie----*shrugs from the baby*, straws in a cup ----*more like straws...everywhere...all over the floor*...cloud dough------*W thinks its more fun to sit on the dough in the bin and not play with it*.

The babies are doing it wrong

I honestly haven't attempted any beans in a box sensory thing like @Junebug060609 's picture, because I see that exact thing happening. And then we have a choking hazard for the little baby.
I think I torture myself feeling like I have to offer Elinor all of these experiences, when really some of her favorites have just been dry oatmeal in a bowl, or soapy water. To be fair to her, she is very independent and likes to play on her own, but when we're together and we're not reading stories, I think I don't know how to play with her. That may be my real problem.

Glad I'm not alone! Also I feel like a lot of these homemade things end up being more expensive than if I jut bought it. I mean when they are older and can experience making things I get it, but now??? Ugh. Oh and they only want to eat stuff so all these fun toddler activities I find are just death traps! No way could I let them sort cotton balls or play with pipe cleaners. Beans in a bin? Heimlich maneuver coming up. #-o
Absolutely! I am so glad I am not alone in all this! You ladies are real moms, just like me! Not the weird, crazy Stepford-esque moms who live in a Pinterest Board!

LMAO at the bolded @andrea ri 80!!!!

Between work, my church obligations, taking care of Ben, DH and my home, there aren't enough hours in the day for all that Pinterest crap!

My current Pinterest failings have to do with her first birthday.  I have been pinning ideas since she was in the womb.  I think the only things I am doing that are on my board are those that someone else is creating for me, like the birthday hat and banner from Etsy and the cake from the bakery.  The only thing I have done myself is order stuff from other people.
I think facilitating their creation totally counts.  :)

  • There is a great website called Pintrosity. Maybe you've already seen it. It always makes me laugh and remember that I am not the only one that can't have a picture perfect home, dinner, art display all the time. Hang in there!

We tried a toilet paper roll taped to the wall amd cotton balls to drop. It was a success...sort of. She tore it off the wall amd taped it to herself. Played for about 10 minutes then proceeded to shred the cotton balls. Silly kid
