Scared of unexpected noises

Recently my son has been scared of some loud noises that are unexpected. It's not all the time only sometimes. I'm not sure whether to be concerned or not. Some examples are when we use the food processor, grabbing a pot or pan out the cabinet and daycare said he got upset when a fire truck went by. Just was wondering if any of the other babies in his BMB is experiencing the same thing....

Re: Scared of unexpected noises

  • J just started doing this about 3 weeks ago. Mostly pots and pans. I would say it seems normal.

  • One time when I was 9 month pregnant I dropped a cutting board on the counter. He jumped in the womb. It is natural!

  • This just happened to us today! LO was fine after a moment.
  • My daughter did this for a little bit with the food processor and the blow dryer. She's totally fine with them now! I think its totally normal!

  • I actually see this now that R can actually focus on something. The other day he was watching MMCH and the Hot Dog Dance song came on. He loves it and loves to bounce along. My dad thought it would be a fantastic time to take out the recycling. Normally R wouldn't care but he was so focused on the show and the rustling of bottles disrupted that. I'm thinking it's a development. He understands that Mickey on tv is one thing but grandpa making a racket is another.

Yes. Exactly. Why wouldn't a loud, unexpected noise startle a baby, or anyone for that matter? This is definitely not something to be concerned about.

  • I just read in my AAP book that this behavior typically develops around this time. They gave the example of being scared of the vacuum. The recommendation is to avoid doing the things that scare baby and to comfort them when it happens. They will outgrow it.

  • Late to the game but I would say it's normal.

  • Normal. Like pp - I'd be worried if LO didn't startle with loud unexpected noises.

  • Yea, DD does this too.  We can vacuum or play loud music and she's fine, but if I sneeze she freaks out.

  • LO has some issues with the vacuum and the food disposal.  He also really freaked the other day when the kettle startled to whistle when it was boiling.

  • A gets scared when I sneeze. I just figured she was developing something. I don't know what that something is.

DD has taken to being scared of the vacuum. She crawls away screaming from it. I have had to put her in the moby to vacuum. She acts like I've chased her with it. :-/
